Perhaps the government subsidies for small airports makes the flight profitable?

That can't be more than a 12 minute flight

ETA: 18 minutes total

The flight goes to/from Hattiesburg & Dallas, but it has a stop in Meridian for the passengers that only need the Meridian/Dallas leg.

Meridian and Hattiesburg are part of Essential air Service by the DOT. So instead of flying two routes from DFW, AA just combines the route with a stop.

That's interesting. I didn't know airlines did this. It just seems like the airports are so close together that it's pointless to even operate out of the Hattiesburg/Laurel airport

Essential Air Service is the driver of this.

That's the way airlines operated before the Deregulation Act of 1978. Just 20 years ago Delta was still flying MD-88's, 737's, 727's, and 757's from Jackson to Monroe, Shreveport, and Pensacola, all once daily, and to Birmingham 3 times daily.

It's crazy how much the industry has changed since 9/11, and even just prior to 9/11.

I had no idea either had an airport. I meet people all of the time flying into Gulfport that are making the drive home up to Hattiesburg.

There are 7 airports in MS that still have commercial service. Listed here from greatest to least amount of boardings-

Jackson (JAN)

Gulfport/Biloxi (GPT)

Columbus/Starkville/West Point (GTR)

Hattiesburg/Laurel (PIB)

Meridian (MEI)

Tupelo (TUP)

Greenville (GLH)

Also-

Tunica (UTM) receives casino charters.

I've flown out of GPT instead of MSY a few times. It's only about 25 miles and maybe 15 minutes further away. Unless it's a foggy morning on the Causeway. Then it's faster to get to than MSY.

I like GPT and wish Southwest would have at least given it a try. Airtran was already there, and when the two merged, they pulled them out of GPT. Assholes.

Southwest pulled out of JAN completely. I think it had to do with the airport trying to extort more fees.

Cannot believe Greenville has commercial service.

Tunica (UTA) may be the nicest airport in the state thanks to the casino money!

I really like GPT as well. It takes no time for me to get to and it's always a breeze through there. The Lazy Mag Brewhouse isn't a bad spot to wait out a delay either.

This is true, plus Jackson is run by a 4th grade level city council.

The milk run from Seattle to Juneau includes a Wrangell Ak to Petersburg Ak leg. They are about 30 miles apart. It's like flightseeing at 10,000 feet in a 737. Both towns have less than 3,000 ppl.

Pretty interesting, Greenville airport was once a major training base for the Army Air Corps during WWII. Then it became Greenville AFB. It was a town in and of itself. There is a museum in the terminal building with old photos and memorabilia. Thousands of pilots had trained there by the time it closed in the 1960's

In the 70's, Southern Air flew DC-9's from Greenville to New Orleans and Memphis. There's not much left of the airport today, but Boutique Air currently serves to DFW and Nashville.
