Who's been Medellín, Colombia?

I've heard it's starting to become a tourist spot with the decline of murders over the last 2 decades. Just wondering about the dos and don'ts from personal experiences in the city.

Those who have, didn’t live to tell the tale

I've learned my lesson well. Hope I live to tell the secrets I have learned.

It’s fun and pretty safe. Use common sense. Don’t leave your drink unattended. Don’t try to buy drugs. Don’t flash anything you can’t risk losing. No more dangerous than most US cities. Helps if you know a little Spanish.

I haven't personally been but I have multiple friends who have, and they had nothing but good things to say. Like one person said use common sense and be aware of your surroundings but that's good advice for anywhere you go.

Colombia.
There's a poster here that lives in Colombia and will probably chime in.
I spent a fair amount of time in Colombia. I found it to be no different than any major American city. Actually much nicer than most.

It is okay not the best food or drinks but cheap.
Beautiful women, lots of sex tourists since covid. Many reports of guys being drugged with Scopolamine . Stay off tinder and dating apps, the organized gangs use these to drug to drug and rob you of everything.
Crime is on a major uptick in last 2 years. Mostly robberies in Rosa areas and where richer folks stay. Thieves looking for wallet, phones, and watches. “don’t give papaya” -- meaning don't go around acting like a baller, wearing gold chains, flashing your phone on street and trying to impress with money.
To me better places to go for vacation but can be good change of pace.

Assuming, but maybe not, you read the article in TimeOut this week that named Medellin as the coolest neighborhood in the world with Mid-City in New Orleans at #7.
I’m not sure cool is the thing that connects those two cities.

What would you recommend in South America then? I've been to Costa Rica already. I was planning on Panama, and Cartagena, Colombia on my next trip.

Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico all central I know. Not saying Medellin is bad, but it has...changed to not as good as 8 years ago. My next desire is Peru just for the food.

It’s funny I was just talking to one of my big accounts at work yesterday
40 year old guy with a wife and kids went to a bachelor party in Medellín. They hired some girls for the week and he feel for one of them. Divorced his wife and built a 1m dollar pad down there
He said it’s good but you have to know we’re not to go at dark. Said he got pulled over the other day and the cop wanted $100.
