Visiting White Mountains (NH) and Boston this week, any recs?

Will have access to a car. Will also have a 2 y/o. Flying in and out of Boston and will be there for a couple days on the back end.
Just looking for any recommendations in the area.
Went to Alaska last month and he loved the waterfalls so would like to take him to see some more. Also some light hiking would be great.
We wouldn’t mind seeing some coastal towns for a day.
Mostly just looking for some things the boy will enjoy. TIA

Don't use it while you're in Boston.

We are dropping it off once we get there

Just went a week ago. Mt. Washington Auto Road was amazing. Portland, Maine was great. Newport, Rhode Island was nice as well.

Newport, while great, is the opposite direction of where he will be going. And Portland is a bit of a hike in the wrong direction.
Portsmouth, NH is on the way and a great coastal town.

Ok so you recommend doing the drive over the rail? I was more interested in driving but my wife’s uncle (hosting us) gave us sort of inconclusive advice on driving.
And I would love to drive the coast in Maine but may be a little out of the way just because we will only have 3 full days. We were wondering why we didn’t book our flights Saturday or Sunday these past few days

I'd recommend taking a car over the rail. There's so many great little towns to visit that having the option to stop along the way or hop in the car and visiting another place would be better than taking the rail to one location and kind of feeling stuck.

That’s true, I wasn’t quite sure how long he would be there and was just giving some options. Portland was only a 2 hour drive from Mt. Washington so we went there, spent one night then 2 hours back to Boston to fly home. We want to go back when we have more time and spend more time at some of the places we saw, especially Boston.
We drove the rental car and caught the van tour up Mt. Washington. My wife was skiddish about driving it and I recently had foot surgery and wasn’t able to drive. If you’re going to Mt. Washington, I would recommend the van tour from the bottom. The driver we had was very knowledgeable about the mountains and the terrain and talked a lot about it. We stayed on top of the mountain for an hour. There’s a museum, cafe and gift shop there.

Thanks for y’alls help. Let me know if you got any recs in Boston, I know it’s a big town and we really only have a day there but nevertheless if there is something you think a kid may enjoy I’d I appreciate it.
By the way you from Abita or a fan of the beer? I grew up there and know some folks affiliated with the beer

Yeah that’s our situation but her uncle didn’t recommend the van tour for whatever reason. We did something similar in Alaska and really enjoyed it so may go that route.
I really don’t mind driving other than the fact our vehicle will be tiny

A heads up if you do decide to go to the top of Mt. Washington. We were there 2 weeks ago and it was cold at the top. I wore jeans and bought a light jacket at the gift shop at the bottom because it was 40 degrees with 40+ mph winds at the peak.

Great tip. Not sure we packed quite right for that type of weather so I appreciate it

If you want to do a more scenic route from Boston to Conway, go up 93 and cut over on highway 25instead of 95 and hit lake Winnipesaukee. Lots of cool little towns on the lake. Break up the drive by stopping for lunch in one of the small towns and walk around

I've gone up the mountain three ways--rail, hiking, and car. I liked the hike the best, but that's an all day affair and you're kind of a slave to the weather. The car was pretty terrifying as the road up is very narrow in some places. Definitely find a way to get to the top and walk around, though. It's beautiful.
Head over to the Mt. Washington Hotel and give yourself a tour. It's beautiful and full of history. Try to have dinner there or at least grab a drink.
North Conway is a pretty cool town with places to eat.
Drive down to Portland or Kennebunkport.

Where are you staying in the White Mountains?
You can go check out Upper and Lower Falls off of Route 302 if you are closer to North Conway. Check out LINK to look for waterfalls in the area. I think Bridalveil Falls, Sabbaday Falls, and Franconia Falls are all inbetween Lincoln North Conway. If you are more on the western side check out The Basin and The Flume($) in Franconia Notch. There's also plenty of nice, easy hikes in the are which provide some great views. Artists Bluff and Lonesome Lake are two in Franconia Notch.
If you like beer and breweries check out Moat Mountain (North Conway) and Schilling (Littleton). Littleton also has Chutters, the world's longest candy counter.
The Mt Washington Hotel has some interesting history. There is an AMC Hut off route 302 in Crawford Notch.
If money isn't a concern I'd say take the train up Mt Washington. The auto road is fun but if you have a little one the choo choo should be more fun.

Agree. We were going to drive up, but when I called to check on the weather they said the big Laconia Motorcycle Week people had it reserved for motorcycles only that day. But, she said, we could ride up in the van.
Soooo glad we did the van. It was sketchy passing bikes going the other direction. I would not want to drive a car and meet another car on that little road.
Great little trip. Very memorable, and we got some cool photos.

We are in Lincoln, thanks for the tips
ETA: picked up a 4 pk of MOAT and it was great. Going to check out the Woodstock brewery as well

Meant to say early on in this thread and forgot:
Most of this thread is about NH, but if you have any Boston inquiries feel free to post them and I’ll be happy to help out.
