WASHINGTON — The State Department on Monday urged Americans reconsider any international travel they may have planned and said it would issue specific warnings not to visit roughly 80% of the world's countries due to risks from the coronavirus pandemic. The United States hasn't had a global advisory warning against international travel since August, when guidance was revoked by the Trump administration.

quote:

The advice issued by the department isn't a formal global advisory. Instead, it says the State Department will start using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standards as it prepares health and safety guidelines for individual countries. Because of those standards, about 80% of countries will be classified as “Level 4” or “do not travel.”
Travel is also discouraged for the remaining 20%, though not as emphatically. It says people with plans to visit those countries should reconsider before proceeding.

What's the point of traveling anyways if most everything you want to do is closed or you have to quarantine for 2 weeks when you get there? It's bad enough you have to wear a mask for the duration of a flight to get where you want to go. Covid is an absolute vacation ruiner.

I'm even starting to have doubts about Summer 2022. Are we seriously going to be out of all this in a year?

This blows.

No one is listening to this advice. I'm vaccinated and moving my life forward. And I don't think it's a ruiner at all. Even during the heights of COVID I had a good time (Lake Tahoe). Masks suck, but don't head somewhere like a major city that's indoor dependent. Off to Croatia this summer. Sure, they don't allow indoor dining but why the frick would I eat inside in Croatia?

Bunch of virtue signaling wusses. With current vaccination pace, Americans will have herd immunity in less than 2 months. I'm moving on with my life. Don't let a virus with 99% survival rate dominate your life.

Only if you let it. We've been knocking out National Parks for the last year and enjoying the hell out of it. There's still a ton to do. Not to mention, a lot of places DGAF about masks or any of that nonsense any longer.

They're trying to keep people home to spend money here.

No reason you can't travel where you want.

I agree and I think we underestimate how interesting the States are. I spent a lot of time in the desert last year. It was my first time, and I was staggered by the landscapes.

The countries I want to visit are locked down. It’s not my decision.

Yeah, not much can be done about that, but as soon as they are open, there's zero chance I let some BS warning like the above stop me from going.

I wish it was easier to find out what places these are so I could plan on traveling to them.

This virus is not going anywhere - it is too widespread and it mutates like most viruses. We have to confront the fact that what was once "cold & flu season" will now be "cold, flu and covid" season.

The relentless fear porning has set a terrible precedent. I think they are starting to realize that.

We're heading to Costa Rica in July, and they're pretty much wide open. No ruined vacation here.
