unpopular cities in Ireland to visit

Found $370 RT out of Chicago in November to Dublin. Of course we'll do Dublin and maybe Cork or another, but anyone know of a city to visit thats off the beaten path? We're gonna have maybe 4-6 28 yo's who really enjoy the drinking scene.
When I say off the beaten path I mean pretty much the top 5 cities in POP.

After Dublin, no place in Ireland is very big, population wise. Galway doesn’t have 100k inhabitants. So you’re talking towns, not cities.

I would do Galway over Cork.
As far as smaller cities go:
My favorite spot was Killarney. Great little town with some good restaurants and bars. Sits on the edge of a national park where there are some good hikes and is a good base for doing the Ring of Kerry or Dingle Penisula.
Kilkenny is another cool town. Plenty to see and do there for a day or two. Love the local beer - Kilkenny. Again, some good restaurants and pubs, and they're crazy about this Irish sport called hurling (similar to lacrosse I guess).
Ennis is a cool town near Shannon airport, if your flying in or out of there. I went into a local bar there and the old bartender just poured me a Guiness and put it in front of me without me saying a word. It was like, why else would you be here?
Kinsale has become a trendy tourist spot, popular with foodies and hipsters.
Donegal is very old school Irish up in the northeast. That area is the least visited part of the country. It would be cool to drive around to some of these little coastal villages up there and visit Slieve League cliffs.
Howth is a suburb of Dublin. You can ride the tram up there for some great scenery and awesome seafood.

I really enjoyed Kilkenny a lot more than I thought I would. Inexpensive accommodations and food compared to other parts of Ireland and numerous good pubs with friendly locals. Make sure to go to the St. Mary’s Medieval Mile museum and do the guided tour.

Its not a big party country with clubs and what not, certainly you can find that scene if you truly want.
But as you likely know, its a pub scene place. Go have some pints in a homely pub and chat up some locals. Its fantastic for that and I think anyone can really enjoy that. Its a country more known for the landscape and scenery then for the cities.

Doolin. Dingle. Cobh. Lahinch.
Basically any small town in Ireland will have an awesome pub you can walk into, sit down and start up a conversation with the locals. They love Americans.

Even Innis Mor has a couple of good pubs.
The Lucky Star sadly no longer numbers amongst them...

There are pubs everywhere, certainly don't worry about that. They drink a lot more in public thus pub in the UK. Its much more popular to have neighborhood pubs even in small farming towns of under 100 people.

I'll second this. It was my favorite spot of the places I went in Ireland too. Surprisingly good food. Great bars, lots of live music.
Dingle was also awesome.

Did Killkenny and Galway when I went and they are both great.

I went to Kinsale, Killarney, and Lahinch in May and enjoyed each one for different reasons.
Kinsale was a moderate sized town with a lot of great little restaurants and pubs. Cool old fort within walking distance, and about 15 minutes away is Old Head, which is the most incredible golf course I’ve ever seen, but you can drive around the property as well I believe.
Killarney was the “biggest” town. They had week long horse races going on at the local grass track which was a lot of fun.
Lahinch is tiny.. basically one street with a few local establishments. We were told outside of summer, there’s about 500 full time residences. It’s also the capital of surfing in Ireland, so there’s that. Cliffs of Moher are close by which are pretty incredible.

Need a better title. Why would you visit unpopular places?

Do some solid drinking and then immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the country and people. Dublin will have a wealth of things to do and see, but head north to Londonderry, and perhaps even Belfast in NI.

Dingle was also awesome.
Wish we would have spent more time in Dingle. Quintessential Irish town.

Right, I'm irish and I've visited most major towns on stag weekends or lads weekends.
Galway, amazing place. Great pubs and great nightclubs. Easy going vibe and fun atmosphere year round.
Cork city, similar to above but not quite as good.
Killarney, was recently there for a weekend with 14 men on a stag weekend, it was brilliant. Great pubs and a few good nightclubs. Abundance of women.
Lahinch, great party tow. Although, it's very much a summer spot.
Kilkenny and Limerick city are good fun.
Dungarvan in Waterford is another cool spot.
Obviously, dublin is a great spot for tourists and you'll have plenty of fun.
Look into going horse racing or something like that. The winter is the jump racing season. A huge sport here and there is a great party around each meeting.
Honestly, there are heaps of places. You just need to have a good attitude, not be arrogant or snobby and the irish will look after you. We love Americans that pop over for a good time, but don't like the arrogant or demanding ones.
Ireland is off the cuff and easy going.
If you need any deeper recs let me know.
