Serious question, but where on earth can you get eight people in? I have to assume it's a couple different reservations with lounge access because I've never been to one that allows more than two adult guests (and I'm pretty sure this is policy).

For the person you're responding to, he should be totally fine with wife and two kids. United Clubs don't count child dependents.

ETA: I'm also Club card and self-scan has never given me a guest option of more than +2.

I travel quite a bit for work, mostly between United hubs, so I have a lot of time waiting for red eyes back to ORD from LAX and SFO - comfortable seats, space to work, and free drinks. That's what I prefer with the time I spend traveling. If you don't care, that's fine

Heathrow. Not sure if it was a mistake. We had 4 people headed out of Houston and they made us buy a pass for the 4th person.

On the way back they said we could get 8 people in.

have the club card and 99% of the time I travel alone for work but how strict are they with the plus 2 allowances? If traveling with my wife and 2 kids, would it be a problem to get us all in?

The United club card allows:
you +2 adult guests (your wife would obviously be one of those)

OR

you and your wife +2 dependent children under the age of 21

You can get to the airport early to enjoy an open bar and tons of food. They have big comfortable chairs, charging stations galore, super clean bathrooms, etc.

They were initially designed for business travelers who want some peace and quiet before they get onto a flight, lounges typically have little “hot rooms” where you can hop onto a conference call and not have to worry about all of the airport noise around you

I don’t like showing up at the airport at the last minute, I’d rather hang out in a lounge for 60 minutes than having bad anxiety while stuck in traffic from a bad accident or unexpected construction about to miss my flight

I just go for the cocktails. Maybe a piece of fruit if I am hungry. Terminal B club usually has a good soup and salad.

The main appeal to me is during work travel. I'm often going direct from a client site to an airport. Having a lounge there provides a quiet spot to work with consistent wifi and food.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go to any airport lounge except some international business class lounges.

I’d rather have a tooth pulled than spend an unnecessary hour in an airport. And waiting in line to get in one of these things?

I guess for a layover it’s better than genpop but I just belly up to a bar and read the newspaper

If you are an occasional flyer like me I absolutely agree with you. The lounges are mostly for the guys that are flying 100+ days a year as said because they don't have anywhere else to go, so they can enjoy the free food and drinks and a place to hang you. I'm sure sitting at the Ruby Tuesdays airport bars gets very old very quick.

I don't really get it either especially with how crowded many of them are these days

FWIW, you're likely to encounter lines at the credit card clubs (i.e. Centurion and Capital One) rather than an airline lounge.

I've never waited in line to get into United Club. As mentioned before, though, I travel through United's major hubs where the lounges are pretty big, especially at LAX, ORD and SFO. ORD tends to be very busy early morning and midday, while SFO is busier around the late dinner hour. Still, never encountered a line for any. Some lounges are smaller than others - MSP is small but they're a Delta hub, which makes access to the United Club pretty easy.

A nice lounge does not feel like you’re waiting in an airport, that is the very essence of why people enjoy being inside of the lounge

Outside of something extraordinary, I'm not getting to the airport 2 hours just to go to the lounge. But I do enjoy a short stop in a lounge if available.

Two times when a lounge is nice, sometimes I'm traveling with people who have different flights and it makes sense to head to airport together, and I can hang in the lounge if my flight is later. And more important, for those of us who don't live in cities with major hubs, lounges are a nice way to spend the time between connecting flights.

In most other cities, I would agree, but right now IAH is a total fricking shite show and traffic is abhorrent , I hear about people missing flights all the time about the traffic and fender benders which clog up the single lanes
