Planning a trip for a few days to the falls in June of next year. Taking 3 boys, ages 5-12. Planning to visit the falls, ride the Maid of the Mist, but other than that, what else to possibly entertain them for a couple of days? I've heard it is pretty touristy so trying to stay away from that.

If you are on the Canadian side, go see Toronto. Very nice city.

As a previous buffalo resident, I'd highly recommend spending maybe a day up in the falls and the rest of your time in the buff area. List of activities below!
Go get some wings in East Aurora at Bar Bill
Take a walk around the buffalo zoo/delaware park
Head to canalside to walk along the waterfront where you can rent kayaks or pedalboats
If the Bisons are still a minor league baseball team, go attend a game (you can route for blue cheese, mild wing, or hot wing (celery retired last year))
I loved the buffalo museum of science, super easy to entertain a bunch of boys with engineering things like cranes, space, and fitness
Summer is also festival season so you can usually find something going on like italian festival, greek fest, etc
Plenty of farms in the surrounding towns that have activities for kids
Darien lake if you want an amusement park, about 45 min east of buffalo off 90

I spent a summer in nearby Grand Island, NY in the late 1990’s and I agree with this 100%. Go see the Falls and the boat ride or whatever and then move on. The Canadian side was bizarre. They had the beautiful Falls, a new casino, restaurants whose heydays were in the 1950’s and a bunch of weird circus sideshow exhibits like the Alien museum, Gangster museum, etc.
The people in Buffalo really seemed to enjoy the warm weather and we went to a baseball game. Toronto was fun. Niagara on the Lake and the nearby wineries might not be kid friendly.
