Travel Setup Ideas for Large Family in Ford Expedition — Roof & Hitch Rack Solutions?

We’re planning some road trips with our large family (5+ kids), and I’m looking for creative, efficient ways to maximize cargo space in our Ford Expedition—without jumping straight to an enclosed trailer.
Roof rack ideas. Good trailer hitch mounts.
Pictures would be great for ideas.

I bought a PakMule Pro and we load water tight containers and strap those down with whatever me may have that is to much for the Explorer trunk.

Got my hitch mount on my way to Colorado after the car interior wasn’t big enough. Lowes or Home Depot I think

I bought this about 10 years ago. I think we’ve used it at least once a year and it’s still in great shape. I bought this size but they have smaller ones

I bought a quality hitch mount (same width as our Expedition at the time) and then got four relatively tall plastic totes that fit perfectly within the frame. Used straps to tie them down and ensure the tops didn't fall off. Worked like a champ. We could fit nearly all of the luggage (soft bags, etc) into two, beach & other accessories into another, and even the non-perishable food items in the last one.
It also makes it easy to get to the VRBO/condo/hotel room since you only have to move the totes.

We had an expedition with a trailer hitch rack. That was enough for everything. Our old car we had a roof mounted bin but it was noisy at high speed. I like the hitch rack better.

I know nobody will like this, but pack less shite. Get laundry done.

I can't imagine having this much stuff. We have a Yukon XL as our family road trip car and with two adults, a one year old, a 100lb dog, and all of our stuff, I've never felt like I needed more space. Unless you have 4 kids, what all are you bringing?
