Its been a few years since I have been and had time to play tourist and I will be taking my 21 year old daughter for her first trip.

I suspect our ideas of what to see and do might not be the same.

What's your recommendations? Staying near Times Square

Want restaurant recs? Bars? Do touristy crap? Be off the beaten path? What time of year?

You can do a lot of things in New York. Some details would be helpful.

Going first week of December. Enough touristy crap so she can say she has been to the main ones--

I went up to the top of the WTC buildings back in the seventies and I am glad I did that.

Go to WTC & the Oculus then walk to Dead Rabbit for a drink. Food at Eataly. You can see Wall Street while you’re in the neighborhood. Trinity Church is being renovated, but the graveyard is still cool. Walk down to South Ferry/Battery Park.

Pizza at John’s on Bleecker. The place Taylor Swift wrote a song about is half a block away and since your daughter is 21 she might be in to seeing it. Tons of girls taking pics out in front every day.

Since it’s around Christmas go see the tree at Rock Center. Crowded, but an easy subway ride. Go ice skate at Bryant Park instead of Rock Center.

If you want to feel like you’re on another continent, take her to Chinatown in Flushing. It makes Chinatown in SF look WASPy in comparison.

Obviously tons of museums and shows to see, just trying to give you non “I heart NY” things to do while still getting some highlights.

Actually, not a bad suggestion. One of my top two or three favorite dim sum spots in NYC is right next to the Main St station. It's a straight-shot on the 7 train from Times Square and 42nd. Even quicker if you catch the express during rush hour.

I went last year in a similar time, make sure to bring a beanie and a scarf, the wind really gets going between the buildings when walking around.

I would suggest doing the Rockefeller Center tree just to say you have done it, and you will be a few blocks from it.

You can probably do a day in Lower Manhattan; the 9/11 Museum/Memorial, Freedom Hall, and Wall Street/Bull statue are all right there, then walk down to Battery Park and get on the ferry for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Top of the rock area will be all decorated a must do. Get your tickets ahead of time because it’ll all be slammed. TKTS catch a play for sure. Carmine’s is my go to pre-theatre dining recommendation. Have fun

Bryant Park is really cool at that time.

Also, it may be a touristy thing, but ice skating in Central Park was really cool for someone from the south that doesn't visit NYC very often.

Family and I have been during Christmas, the past 2 years. Wife and I went back this summer on July 4th, for an early 25th wedding anniversary.(it was Louisiana hot during the 4th) We have stayed in Times Square all 3 trips. Have stayed at the Crowne Plaza and Marriott Marquis, CP slightly cheaper than the MM. MM is the nicer hotel. Would stay at either one again. Both hotels face Broadway. CP has an entrance/exit right on Broadway and is closer to the subway, I think half a block from it.

I recommend getting the 7 day unlimited subway pass even if you are only going to be there 3 days. Can get you anywhere and is much cheaper than a taxi. Not sure if you are at the right stop, just ask, everyone we have encountered have been extremely helpful with getting us to our destination.

We have seen all the big sights, more than once. All it would take is for one person in my family to say they want to go this year at Xmas and I’d book the trip today! We are planning on going for Thanksgiving in 2020. See the Macy’s parade and possibly watch our God Daughter walk in the parade!

There is so much to see and do, that you can’t see it all in 3 days. Plan out what you want to see in an area, see those sites, then move to your next closest area of interest. Ex: don’t look at Central Park, the go to battery park/Wall Street, then back up to Empire State Building. Waisting a lot of time moving between destinations. We have not been on the boat ride to see the Statue of Liberty, you lose 3-4 hours that you could be seeing other stuff. I was context with pictures of it from Battery Park.

Make sure you hang out with the locals and stay away from the touristy areas so you can come back and tell us how cultured you are.

ETA: Maybe that only applies to the Caribbeans/Mexico.

Lots of good advice in here. I will throw out there:
- Seeing the Christmas Spectacular w/ the Rockettes. That will put you in the Christmas spirit if nothing else will.

- Maybe take a carriage ride through Central Park

- Go to the top of the Empire State Building

- Go to Grand Central Station (great oyster house there)

Tough thing about NYC is that it is so big with so much stuff that you could probably take ever recommendation on here and have a blast, but you won't have the time.

All of the things mentioned are good. Definitely see a show! Wicked is my favorite.
If you like museums, the Metropolitan Museum (The Met) is phenomenal!
Bryant Park is fun with all the holiday kiosks set up around the skating rink.
Highly recommend 9/11 museum (tix in advance) and Top of the Rock for the amazing view of the entire city.
