Looking at anther cheap Euro trip. Round trip to Edinburgh is a good price for my next vacation. I would like to see Edinburgh, Glasgow and ride up to Inverness. 7 days. Stick to Scotland or should I also see north England.

FWIW, the wife and I are leaving for Scotland in less than two weeks. 7 day trip excluding travel. We Will be doing Edinburgh, Inverness, and Isle of Sky. Focused itineraries at each stop. Happy to share more of our experiences after the trip.

Stick to Scotland, skip Glasgow and head to Isle of Skye after Inverness.

We started in Glasgow - and it was very much worth seeing. I can go into detail about specific sites if you want.
Then drove to Loch Lomond, Inverlochy Castle and on to the Isle of Sky (all while partaking of local sites and food along the way).
Sky is an incredible highlight - can provide lots of recommendations there.
Then to Loch Ness, Inverness, Culloden. Back down through Sterling and Edinboro and a day at the Border Regions.
Truly, one of the greatest trips of my life.
Which month are you anticipating? You'll want to potentially plan around the midges.
LMK, and I can possibly help you offline.

Tell me more about the private driver. Did you rent a car at any time?

The driver was a true gentleman in his 50s - I think he was an engineer (retired) by training. But he drives 3 months of the year just for mad money so he and his wife can travel the rest of the year. This is to say he was wearing a suit the entire time, was extremely soft spoken and knowledgeable and was entirely flexible even though we in theory had a set itinerary.
He was able to point out extremely detailed facts about every single place we went. He knew about hidden food gems and the like.
And when visiting crowded sites, it was nice to just be dropped off right in front. Also, if tickets or other passes are required, the driver has handled it all ahead of time. And in many spots - like the Talisker Distillery - he knew people that worked there, so access was almost always better than if you had been on your own.

Found this 7 day itinerary that looks like a good outline.
Here’s the 7 day Scotland road trip map and route and a breakdown of the best one week Scotland road trip for first-timers:
Day 1 – Edinburgh
Day 2 – Edinburgh to Stirling to Pitlochry
Day 3 – Pitlochry to Cairngorms to Inverness
Day 4 – Inverness to Isle of Skye
Day 5 – Isle of Skye
Day 6 – Isle of Skye to Glencoe
Day 7 – Glencoe to Loch Lomond to Edinburgh

That seems like a good itinerary but would suggest going to St. Andrews in there as well, might need to add another day.

I still think avoiding Glasgow is a mistake. For one thing, you can tour both the Celtic and Rangers soccer facilities. You also have the Clydesdales and plenty of other sites. Glasgow is a very green and lovely city despite its reputation as being so industrial.

A "Mull" in Scotland is a promontory or a headland.
I'm watching this thread too, I've got a two week trip coming to Scotland in August.
I've got to be in Edinburgh for three days of it.
I'll spend one or two days in Speyside and possibly fly to Orkney for a day from Inverness to see Scapa Flow et al.
I'm uncertain about the rest of the itinerary. Probably Skye as well.
Have a great trip and thanks for any recommendations.

Real Mary King's Close tour. 60 to 90 minutes and completely worth it. I loathe organized tours but this was great. You will learn things about the living conditions back then that you may or may not want to know.
Order tickets now. It fills up.

While I don't find Northern England that inspiring (it was Leeds in January, the last time I went FWIW), you could take the Singapore Airlines 5th freedom flight from Houston to Manchester, and take a three hour train ride to Edinburgh.
I only bring this up because the train route brings you on the edges of at least three national parks (to include an AONB, an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty." I can be hard to look at scenery when you're trying to drive. I'll be honest, it looks just like the Irish countryside (which is also fantastic), and I think the route previously posted brings you through two National Parks in Scotland, but it's a possibility.

I’ll potentially amend the places I visit to minimize the impact.
Thanks for the advice.

If you don’t mind me asking. You hired a driver for a week to drive you to all this places.
What does something like that cost and guessing you covered his ancillary costs?
