I’ve never particularly wanted to go to Australia but I work with Australians a lot. I had a weird somewhat lucid dream two nights ago about going to Sydney and Melbourne. What are they like?

FWIW, my dreams in no way resemble the cities lol. My Sydney was closer to a Greek island st times and my Melbourne kinda looked like San Francisco.

And our business partners had some sort of weird bunker in my dream. Still have no clue what Freud would say about that.

Start off with saying “rise up lights”.

They will think you’re saying razor blades

Sister-in-law married a guy from Melbourne and lived in Sydney for a few years so I was able to go about 5 years ago.

Sydney was just like any other big city to me. The opera house, harbor bridge, botanical gardens, and the zoo were cool. It was nice but I would only spend ~3 days there and go explore other areas like blue mountains, gold coast, barrier reef (also went there to Heron Island which was amazing), outback, etc...

A buddy wemt and told a funny story. Their tour guide told them that the next day’s trip would entail hiking across rough rocks and encountering various poisonous snakes, so wear hiking boots and appropriate gear.

Asian tourist who apparently did not understand the warning showed up in flip flops and a pink Minnie Mouse t-shirt. They struggled that day.

Would love to visit but too many other places on my list to make that long flight. Rather go to South America 6 times than AUS.

Ditto on Sydney. You really only need to stay there for a day. See the Harbor Bridge, Opera House, get some good local craft beer. Sydney is kind of like Dallas or Houston. Big and kind of exciting, but actually "meh" once you walk around a bit.

Melbourne is a really great city. Tour the MCG, (catch an AFL or Cricket match there), The old Melbourne Gaol, ANZAC memorial. There is a restaurant in a street car that travels around the city while you eat--pretty amazing. There is a world class museum. Have a drink at Chloe's Bar in the Young & Jackson Hotel.

Tons of things to do in Melbourne.

Get out and visit the Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves, wine country (there is some REALLY good wine in Australia), craft breweries, and a wildlife refuge or two. You've GOT to hold a koala and pet a kangaroo or wallaby. Don't try to pet an Emu. They aren't very friendly.

I echo what others have said. Sydney was nice, but it could have been any other place in the world. Nothing particularly unique about it.
We didn’t leave Sydney though.

Downtown Sydney is obviously a huge business, financial, and government center, and I found that a lot of shops, stands, and restaurants in the area catered to that schedule, which is annoying as frick when you're on vacation. My wife had a list of sites to hit (Bondi, bridge climb, the Zoo, etc.), and while it's a very pretty city that probably has a ton of cool areas outside of the CBD, I left Australia wishing I spent less time there. Saw some criticisms of their public transportation system prior to going but found it fairly convenient as a tourist because you can get out to the Blue Mountains or ride the ferry through the harbor for just a few dollars.

Melbourne was really cool, and I probably could have spent a week there just eating and drinking my way through the city. Very active city that's big into sports, so there's a lot to do from that perspective as well.

Melbourne, Sydney, and maybe one other place semi-close by is a solid trip. Obviously, Australia has many iconic sites to visit, but it's a huge, relatively sparsely populated country, so some of those things (e.g., Uluru) are a pain in the arse to get to. Would take 3 or more weeks off if you wanted to see more than that unless you absolutely love flying.

I did a semester in college in Melbourne. It's a truly fantastic city and if I could live anywhere in the world, it would be Melbourne. There's tons of a fantastic food from all over the world, old colonial architecture, new areas, the laneways, beach in St Kilda... Just a fantastic place in every way.

I'm torn. I want to go so I can check off all the continents, but I can't decide when to go. I feel like you have to go during their summer but I would love to get some August skiing in at Thredbo. I feel like missing out on the beaches would be too much to pull the trigger on that though.

You do NOT have to go during their summer. I was there for almost three weeks last December/January.

First week was 95+. Second week was 105+. It was fricking miserably hot. And the thing about Australians (actually, the rest of the world) is that they do not treat air conditioning like we do. If it is 110 outside, and 80 inside, that is fine for them.

I've also been there in Mid/Late June, which is their winter, and it was outstanding. Could not have been more beautiful. Mobs of kangaroos, wallabies, and other wildlife just everywhere. In the summer, the only roos you see are the dead ones on the road.

Australian summer is brutal.

Can I still hit the beaches and surf in August? I'm not very familiar with their weather and assumed it gets significantly colder on the coast in the winter

I'm posting from the whitsundays off the coast of Australia now. Agree with everyone's comments on Sydney. I enjoyed our time there but it wasn't that much different than any large American city.

Highly recommend Queensland though. We've spent the past five days on Hamilton island and it's been great.
