Mrs ‘Cop and I are big Pinot Noir people. I’ve hear Willamette Valley is the place.

What’s the best time to go?

We went in April about 5 years ago. Best time to go, weather was awesome. We stayed in Portland area at bed and breakfast. Sandes of Time One of the best we've ever stayed at. Went up to White Salmon river one day and did rafting with Wet Planet rafting...highly suggest it. Did all the waterfalls one day and did wineries another day. Just a great trip...highly recommend.

Late July into early September is the best time to go. Oregon Coast is worth a day or more too as it is just over the hills from wine country.

The weather can also be terrible that time of year. Best time to visit is during the dry season.

Glad it worked out for you but that's not the best time to go.

You can get lucky almost anytime in the Pac NW but if we are looking to play the odds on good to great weather, middle of July to middle of September is the best time to go.

OP, the coast was already mentioned so I'll mention central Oregon. A lot to do year round.

Late summer is the best time for good weather.

We did Willamette and Hood River/White Salmon. We ended up actually liking the wines on the Hood River side more than the Willamette Valley but both were still good.

After harvest when they have the new crop in stainless is good because they have a little more time for you.

Stayed in Portland and made day trips out to there, the coast, and spent time in the city at a lot of the local breweries and the Japanese gardens. We went the week after Christmas about 5 years ago, it was cold but surprisingly was not that wet. Got snow on our last day. Weather doesn’t phase us as we went to Iceland over thanksgiving a few years back as well.

Rented a house in the Pearl District with a couple friends and rented an SUV to make all the day trips.

Late summer, early fall. We stayed at a B&B outside of McMinnville. The Aviation & Space Museum there is worth a visit. You can see the Spruce Goose. Wineries everywhere, fruit markets too are worth the visit. Don't remember much about restaurants, it's been a few years.

The wines; pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot gris. I like pinot noir, but after a couple days they become too cloying, too much cola and bubble gum. I prefer French or Napa. There are some that are outstanding you just need to be selective.

Others mentioned the coast, well worth a visit. Bend and Crater Lake are further south. If you go down to Crater Lake, west of there is the Umpqua Valley and wine region. Wines there are Rhone & Spanish grape based, at least the reds.

Have family that lives out there. Some have worked for some of the local wineries.

In terms of wineries, at least right now and in the short term, there are not a lot of "in winery" tasting options. Due to government mandates, some are currently open for outdoor seating. You can make a reservation for patio or deck type options as well. Study the AVA and status for the latest. Hopefully things will improve more this year. Here are some good links:

I've been out there and based in McMinnville. Cool little town. I liked the McMenamins Hotel, an old historic hotel downtown with a great roof top bar.

We took trips to the coasts and absolutely loved Yachats, Oregon. Beautiful coastal town. Great scenery. Hiking.

I didn't like Portland. Would love to go to Crater Lake. You obviously need to research the impact of the fires to the locations you'd like to visit. It was pretty bad in September smoke wise. Some of the area around Opal Creek. We were going to stay near there in Sisters but not quite sure what it looks like now. Had heard it was pretty bad.

Impacted Areas.

Weather wise, can't comment much other than to say Oregon weather can be surprising. Lots of cold, rainy dreary days potentially. We were out there in September and it was beautiful. Obviously the summer months of July-August are great. It can get HOT in the valley BTW.

I did a site visit to the hospital there. It is a completely different weather pattern than the coast. When you drop into the valley front the mountains, it is more of a desert climate. You do not get as much rain as you do in Portland or the coast.

That wasn’t the Willamette Valley then. You must have been in the Yakima Valley or somewhere else east of the Cascades. The Willamette Valley is on the wet side of Oregon.

Wife and I were there in March 2020...right before all of the shutdowns began.

We stayed a few nights at Youngberg Hill outside of McMinnville. The rooms were great, grounds were beautiful, people were very friendly, and breakfast was good.

We kept our wine tasting to several wineries pretty close to the Inn, there were plenty. The wineries and experiences are more Sonoma than Napa...and that could be a good thing depending on what you are looking for. There are several big grand estates that have been built, but most are smaller intimate places. Honestly, thinking back, I can't remember names, because nothing stood out as amazing. We went into McMinnville for dinner at a few casual places in the evening; Golden Valley Brewery was a decent atmosphere.

We also spent a few days on the coast at the Stephanie Inn. The Inn was amazing, and there are several restaurants within a few blocks along Cannon Beach.

COVID fears were ramping up, and that time of year is their offseason, so it was dead at both the wineries and the Cannon Beach area. The weather was cold and misty, but that didn't bother us too much. It was a fun trip with some great scenery.
