Related to another thread I have going.

We're looking to spend a week in Ireland and considering a 1-2 day stopover in Iceland.

With only 7 days, is shaving off some for Iceland worth it or would that time be better spent in Ireland?

2 adults, 2 kids (15 & 12).

Understand opinions will vary, and I appreciate all of them.

Heading to Iceland tomorrow. I'll let you know how much we get done in our first two days. I have another thread where a few people posted their travel plans. Really good info in there.

I can forward you one of the schedules they sent me if you give me your email.

We are really excited and have full days planned the entire time we are there.

I'd personally spend the full 7 in Ireland and then do a different trip to Iceland where you can spend more time there.

It’s a great place, but I’m not sure that is long enough to see the best of it.

Kinda depends on when you are going. Iceland in summer is a very different experience than Iceland in winter.

I personally think that Iceland is a great stopover destination, because you can see the "Golden Triangle" in one day.

My own view of Iceland is that it's perfect for a day or two, and then it's perfect when you can give yourself at least eight days to drive the Ring Road and actually see the country.

If it's the summer, do the stopover for a day or so, and then you'll know whether or not you want to make the longer trip.

I think it depends how often you travel. If Europe is a once every 10 years trip, then I’d suggest doing both.

If you get to Europe every other year, chances are you can give Iceland its own adventure.

You would be doing both countries a disservice by splitting up your time. Ireland needs a full week. We took our 2 preteen kids last year for a week and it was magical . I would hate to think we had to cut 2 days from that.

Very much appreciate everyone's insight. I didn't want to shave off days for Scotland so we could give Ireland it's due. Gave thought to Iceland since we will likely layover there anyway.

Not sure there's a way to PM on Tigerdroppings. Would you mind sharing your experience in Ireland, do's and dont's, etc.?

Getting flights nailed down then we'll start planning itinerary and hotel.

Going to Europe for us Americans is always a balance between giving each place its due and trying to see everything “while we’re already over there”
I haven’t been to Iceland but I know that it would need more than 2 days.
Ireland was awesome, and I think it’s a great trip for an American family.

You can email me at slinger1317 at gmail, I’ll be happy to share my itinerary and experiences.

Just went 2 weeks ago. Two days is plenty of time to make it to the black sand beach and back with the golden circle in the middle. Don’t expect the weather to be in your favor this time of year. It’s likely to rain or snow every day with constant cloud cover. There’s nothing of significance to see in Reykjavic so bypass it. Regardless of weather it’s still a beautiful country to see even if for a brief time. There’s some geothermal areas and the blue lagoon is within 20 minutes of the airport.

I disagree on Reykjavik. If you stay in old town, it’s very walkable with a great food and bar scene.

While I’d recommend spending more time in Iceland, if you have 1-2 full days there, I’d do one day on the Golden Circle, and one day in Reykjavik. You could do Seljalandsfoss and the Black Beach in a day, but that’s two long days if you’re doing the Golden Circle. I think you’re better served going back to Iceland and using Vik as a central location to explore the south coast.

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but if you have an evening flight out, book some time at the Blue Lagoon on the way to the airport. I know it’s touristy and overpriced, but it was a fun way to relax before the flight.

It's definitely touristy and overpriced, which is why it gets the hate that it does. But it's also an enjoyable experience if your expectations aren't overinflated by the price.

I generally dislike and avoid tourist attractions.

However, I enjoyed the Blue Lagoon and thought it was worth visiting.

You would be doing yourself a disservice by only spending 2 days in Iceland. 99% of the beauty of that country is outside of Reykjavik. Spend the whole time in Ireland. I've been to both, and love both, but dedicate more time to Ireland and then try to dedicate another trip to just Iceland.
