Flights are really cheap. What's the deal with this airline?

Is it bearable for a 3 hour flight?

Its bearable, but needs to be way cheaper to do. Also, pay for everything and print tickets in advance.Avoid customer service and hope you dont have any flight delays or cancellations.

I've used them 20+ times to fly back and forth to Dallas.

I've yet to have a flight delayed or canceled. I use the app so my ticket is right there and I do not have to print. I also do not bring a bag as I know I will have to pay. That includes a carry on, so I have a large booksack I can put 3 days worth of clothes in.

My flight is an hour but I wouldn't recommend them for a long flight.

Considering Delta, American Airlines, and others have adopted the same method now. I recently booked with American Airline through a 3rd party and didn't realize they booked the cheapest seat. I show up with a carry-on and find out I have to pay extra for that, also had some of the smallest seats available. Was a miserable flight honestly as my seat did not recline, my knees were hitting the chair in front, and no arm room.

I have flown with them a few times and don't have any complaints except that the leg room was a little tight, but I'm also a tall person so it would discomfort me more than most. But I managed fine. No big deal.

I think as long as you know what you're getting into with their luggage restrictions, boarding passes, etc., and you're okay with it all you should be fine.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is to see how many times they fly a day or if they even fly daily. If they have an issue with a plane, you are fricked. They won't usually book you to another airline. I'm not so sure about Spirit anymore, but they sometimes only fly somewhere 2 days a week, and usually no more than once a day. So your plane or crew has an issue, you aren't going anywhere for at least a day.

For example, we had a wedding in Orlando that I drove to on Thursday with friends and my wife flew down on Friday. Well the damn flight had an issue and they couldn't get her there until Saturday night when the wedding was over. So she was fricked basically.

As far as customer service you get what you pay for. Its low cost, for a sub 2 hour flight I don't know why anyone cares about most things honestly.

That was your first mistake. Your second mistake goes back to your first mistake as you would have known the restrictions that came with that ticket. Always, always book through the airline.

They can be a very good deal for specific situations.

For example, my wife frequently visits her sister in Orlando and typically flies Spirit out of ATL.

She's not on a strict schedule, so if there's a delay or cancellation it's not a huge deal. And she also has learned to travel extremely light so she doesn't even need to bring a carry-on. She just uses her giant woman-satchel which apparently still qualifies as a "purse." So her personal item is her luggage. So she avoids all the additional baggage fees.

The result is that she can fly round-trip for like $100, which is probably even cheaper than the gas it would take to drive there and back.

Pay for everything when you book it. It costs more to carry on than checking a bag. If you’re 6’ or more pay for upgrade to their big seats which sit 2x2 instead of 3x3. They are actually very comfy. People have nightmare stories about them though which deter people. I had a free trip go fine so I can’t say too much bad other than the quality of people and staff are on par with the price.

I've taken them to MSY to MCO a few times and they are fine for that flight. I think 3 hours would be pushing my limit, but depending on price difference I could suck it up.

As far as bags, I usually bring only a schoolbag with clothes as my free personal item, but last time I brought that and my briefcase and they didn't charge me extra (either way). I may have gotten lucky but I appreciated it.

It's not the best in the world but if you go in expecting it to be what it is, it won't be that bad.

ETA: Honestly their flight attendants seem to be nicer than a lot of other airlines. Never really interacted with the desk staff so no opinion on them.

Flown them from L.A. to MSY and Orlando but New Orleans is really the longest I would book with them going forward.
The initial rate they quote you is low but once you add paying for choosing your seat, carry on, checked bag(if needed), etc., you may end up with the same price as any other airline. So, get it totaled up and then look at the competition. For a couple more bucks, go with the competition as seating will be more comfortable. The Spirit planes I've been on don't have seats that recline.

Done a little more than 2 hour flight on Spirit a couple of years ago, on time and not bad.

Price and service wise, can't be beat for those short DIRECT flights (and short trips of 3-4 days or less that you have a little leeway on). DON'T do a flight with connections; if you miss it you are SCREWED.

Be smart and the only thing "extra" you should pay for is maybe a reserved or "big" seat. Print your own boarding pass, bring your own drink and food if you need that; and don't check a bag or bring a traditional carry-on. Your one "personal item" (usually a purse, duffel bag, overnight bag, back pack) can actually be small luggage up to 8" X 14" X 18" (including wheels. That's about yay big (mocked this up for my wife before our trip):

Actually I've caught plenty of deals through 3rd party sites such as Priceline. When I can bundle car, air, and hotel for two people in Europe for 3k over 22 days, that is a hell of a deal imo.
I've also had other luck in larger cities getting airfare/hotel cheaper than what I was seeing via Kayak, Google Flights, or Cheap Airfare

I book through Expedia frequently. Never had any issues.

If I’m buying just a flight, I go through the airline though.

Flew spirit last week for an unexpected funeral. My god it was awful. No room, super delayed, garbage pilot, check bag was $32 even in advance, no free drinks or snacks, etc. I will never fly it again if I can help it. It was just the only affordable option for a return flight with a day’s notice.

Outside of the delay (possibly garbage pilot, idk) I've known all of the above in advance and it never presented a problem for me
