I am taking the wife and 3 kids (ages 9, 8, 8) to Los Angeles for the week of thanksgiving (Sunday to Saturday) to visit friends. Looking for ideas of how to spend the time. One note, Disneyland is out. Our friends live in Brentwood and I don't want to drive all of the way to Anaheim. Besides, I've heard Universal Studios is better. Here is what I have come up with so far:

- Sunday - Arrive ~3pm into LAX. Might stay in hotel first 2 nights to have a little family time bf we go to friend's house. Thinking about staying in Marina Del Rey.

Monday - Friend got tix to Clipper's game, so this evening is set. Thinking do the Hollywood/Sunset/Rodeo Drive thing until the game. (Lunch suggestions appreciated.)

Tuesday - Universal Studios and leave hotel to go to friend's house.

Wednesday - I've never seen the La Brea tar pits, so I wanted to check that out. Maybe take kids up to the Hollywood sign? Looking for more suggestions.

Thursday - Thanksgiving. No activities. Get drunk and watch football with friends.

Friday - Looking for suggestions. Maybe Venice Beach and/or Santa Monica Pier?

Saturday - fly home

Appreciate the input.

Tar pits are good for 1-2 hours. If you never been def do Disney over universal and traffic is bad but just plan ahead and your be fine.

You should def do Disney. It is wonderful. I went with my five year old in May and it was the highlight of our week. Check craigslist for cheap tickets. We were able to get some for about $60. It was a disney employee. They met us at the gate, gave us our tickets, walked in with us to make sure they were real, and then we paid after we were in.

Skip Venice beach, especially with kids. There is good shopping and restaurants on Abbot Kiney, but the beach is dirty, crowded and sketchy.

If you like hiking, there are some amazing trails about an hour north of LA in Fillmore called Tar Creek. This would only be recommended if your kids are about 10 and up.

Couple things-

Do not go to Hollywood. It's an absolute shite show. Venice beach is a shite show as well but it's a must do. You can kill a whole day at Venice and Santa Monica promenade. Very close to marina del Rey and Brentwood.

Disneyland is much better than universal, but yeah it's far.

Beverly Hills and rodeo drive are nice for shopping and fancy restaurants.

Going to staples for a clipper game is a good idea, the area has been gentrified and there's plenty to do.

Edit- venice may or may not be appropriate for your kids, depending on how much you want to expose them too. There's going to be profanity by the performers and marijuana smoke from the locals. Taking 3 young kids there probably isn't the best idea.

Thanks for all of that. My friend wants to take us to Venice Beach to see his company's HQ. We probably won't venture far from his office. I appreciate the heads up though.

fwiw the weather has finally cooled (it's been raining on and off) so venice or any of the outdoor activities may be a no go.

the sunset strip in west hollywood isn't the happening scene it used to be 15-20 years ago, but its not bad either. nothing really there for kids though; mostly bars, restaurants and a little shopping.

regarding dining- tell me what you like and what part of town. We have great burgers, mexican and middle eastern food. We probably have the best asian food (chinese, sushi, korean bbq, thai, pho, etc.) in the entire country.

I love LA and there are plenty to do with kids

Go hike the Hollywood sign. Good workout, great views and the kids will love it

Santa Monica is a must.

There is a huge farmers market by the grove mall thats awesome and they will like.

Next to staples center is an area called LA Live. Lots of good eats and bars. Go sit on the patio at the Yardhouse

Get the "Go Card Los Angeles"

LINK

Saves a ton if you plan on going to a few things. Really enjoyed the LA area with the wife and kids (10 & 12) this summer. Venice could be a shock. Lol

I hear you. I love San Diego. Probably my favorite West Coast city. But the primary reason we are going is to visit some close friends who moved there last year and spend Thanksgiving with them.

Thanks for the insight. Mostly looking for lunch places around Hollywood, Brentwood/Beverly Hills, Marina Del Rey, and Santa Monica.

Needs to be somewhat kid friendly. My kids was well-behaved, so I am not looking for typical touristy places (although those recs are welcome), but there needs to be something they will eat on the menu - burgers, chicken, kids menu.

If you have dinner suggestions in the Marina Del Rey and Brentwood areas, please throw those out, as well.

Thanks.

The WB studio tour was probably one of the best things we did on our trip last November. They also enjoyed the roller coaster & amusement rides on the Santa Monica pier.

Below is a few of the other activities we did while there that your kids may be interested in.

Griffith Observatory
LA Zoo
Lucky Strike at LA Live before the Clippers Game
California Science Center - The shuttle Endeavor is housed there and it is an unbelievable sight to behold in person.
USC game at the Coliseum
Harry Potter wasn't open at Universal yet so we chose to take the ride to Anaheim and do 2 days at Disneyland/CA Adventure.

If you're going to be in West LA, Bay Cities Deli in Santa Monica is fantastic. My favorite lunch spot in LA. Cafe Vida in the Palisades is also fantastic for brunch.

Take a stroll with the kids through/around the Venice Canals. It's beautiful and a nice "break" from the hustle-and-bustle of Santa Monica and Venice.

I like killer shrimp in marina del Rey. Nice location and kid friendly. If you are from the south and used to spicy shellfish though it might not be unique and blow you away. If you like seafood boils, there's hot n juicy crawfish (Hollywood) and multiple iterations of the boiling crab.

For burgers my absolute favorite place is stout burger, they have a location in Santa Monica and Hollywood. It's a bit pretentious and maybe not the best place for kids, but easily my favorite burger in town. Other considerations would be umami burger (multiple locations) and golden state near Hollywood.

We do have great deli food, I've never tried the one mentioned above but I love canters and greenblatts. Deli's are generally very kid friendly.

The oinkster in Hollywood has a nice variety of sandwiches.

Mastros (Beverly Hills) is the best steakhouse in the city.

There are great Mexican restaurants all over, and they are generally kid friendly.... el compadre, el cholo, el coyote, don Antonio, titos tacos (not a full service restaurant) and on and on

Thats a internet pic. I grabbed it cause I had a similar pic I took of a plate in TJ but lost it with an old phone. Any street taco stand will do me just fine but there are taco shops all over SoCal that keep them simple and perfect. Carnitas tacos! Chicken, beef or pork with cilantro and onions and a Jarritos soda. The pork seasons better and are my favorite.
