Wow, thanks for sharing this awesome trip.

Can you comment a little bit on the cost of South Africa? Things like taxis, food, alcohol, or other things you found to be very high/low priced.

Sure. We Ubered everywhere and that was cheap. About $4 a ride, but Cape Town isn't a huge city either and we were centrally located. I got an Uber Black from the airport because I've learned to not deal with BS right when I land somewhere new That was closer to US pricing.

I would say for the restaurants you are paying about 70/80% of what you would pay for a comparable experience here.

For example our lunch at a nice vineyard came out to $30 a person w/wine.

I think alcohol fell about the same. It isn't a dirt cheap destination.

Half the time I was there I was on safari where food is included in your room rate.

The car rental and tourist tickets for Table Mountain and Robben Island are what you would expect in the US.

Lastly, I took out about 1500 Rand ($130 US) in cash and if not for shopping the market our last day in Cape Town I would have had a hard time getting rid of it. CCs are very well taken there.

That looks great. It really seems to be a great food place. Not African per se, but worthy.

Looks like Im heading to Port Elizabeth in August/September and just now trying to figure out airfare...man, this is harder to wrap my head around than getting to the Philippines.

I need to read the entire thread to catch up.

What's your issue? If you're heading to Port Elizabeth you're almost definitely be coming into SA in Joburg. If connect in Europe you're looking at two 9 hour flights roughly. 13 and 6/7 or so if you connect in Africa/ME.

trying to decide if I want to do:

New Orleans to Atlanta, then to J-Burg and a 12 hour layover beforethe short flight to Port Elizabeth

or

New Orleans to London overnight, 7 hour layover, then London to J-Burg (overnight), then another 4 hour layover

Im almost thinking going through London with two overnight flights might be better logistically to try and catch some sleep

Ive never been to London (Heathrow)...do you think 7 hours in London is enough to to leave the airport then get back for the PM flight? What about in J-Burg....is 4 hours enough time to get out and do anything?

7 hours to get through customs, get into London, and get back might be very tight and would leave you with maybe an hour to do or see something.

Atl to Joburg sounds like a much smarter approach.

The ATL to Joburg flight gets in at around 5:30pm right?

I'd do that option and sleep there.

Can you tell me what the trip set you back for, for 2 people? I’m guessing 14-16k including flights, at least.
