Snorkeling Trip to the Carribbean - Who's been?

The wife and I want to eventually go on a trip to the carribean.
Some place with a pretty beach and great snorkeling.
I know there are tons of options here so not really sure where to start.
Where have you been and what did you like/dislike about the island, etc?

If coral reefs are a reason for your trip, you should get certified to SCUBA dive.
It's easy and will completely change your perspective.

We did the cruise to Jamaica Grand Cayman and Cozumel
We snorkeled in Cozumel and it was neat seeing all the coral reefs and underwater life around them
It was more strenuous than a snorkel trip we did in Maui
Caymans had a snorkel trip as well but we didn't do that one

As far as the better spots in The Caribbean, they would all be dive locations, and lots wall dives and deeper dives that wouldn't be ideal for snorkeling.
Roatan
Ambergris Caye
Aruba
Bonaire
Turks & Caicos
Grand Cayman
Those are the best spots in the Caribbean.

Not sure about diving, we have never even snorkeled.
Plus it's going to drastically change the cost of the trip I'm sure.
Since we have never been snorkeling, prett much anything will be amazing to us.
St. John looks pretty awesome.

I liked Aruba. The snorkeling was okay, but I wouldn’t plan an entire trip for snorkeling - scuba, sure.
I like the water in Aruba. Very calm. Pool like water.

We arent big into shopping or want anything overly fancy. Less crowded would be preferred.
Something pretty heavy on the nature side with a decent hotel/condo.
Obviously want to snorkel, but would be interested in kayaking, fishing, and sailing as well. And just laying on the beach.

West bay, Roatan Honduras. Great snorkeling right off the beach.
I love cozumel to dive but snorkeling from the beach is not good.

You should check out Sin Duda Villas on the southern end of the Mexico Riviera. A small fishing village with a B&B on the beach and reefs in protected water 100' from shore. You have to fly into Cancun, rent a car and drive, but for a laid-back vacation, it is incredible.

Went snorkeling in Turks and Caicos the reefs are beautiful but not very snorkel friendly. What I mean by that is that it is very hard to get down to the reefs because they were at least 30 to 40 feet down. I went snorkeling in Hawaii about 3 years ago and the reefs were probably 10 to 15 feet down much easier to snorkel and see the fish and corral.

I've been to quite a few places, but the best snorkeling I've seen is from the beach at Half Moon Bay near Akumal, Riviera Maya, in Mexico. It's probably very near the place another poster mentioned. It's been about 12 years since I've been there, but at the time, the reef was right offshore and easily swimmable. Saw huge sea urchins, barracuda, dory and nemo, etc. It's an hour or more south of Cancun. We rented a condo and chilled on the beach. It was in July and we watched baby sea turtles hatch on the beach as well.

Definitely Roatan or Ambergris Caye.

Roatan and Ambergris Caye - located on the second largest barrier reef in the world.
St. John and the BVI - great snorkeling on a lot of different islands. The Indians and some of the snorkeling on Norman island are spectacular and there are lots of other great spots.
Antigua - 365 beaches and a lot of good snorkeling spots
The Bahamas - IMO Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas might be the best dive shop in the world. I swam with sharks there.
That's what I have off the top of my head and that I've done. There's probably more that I'm not mentioning.

What's Roatan like outside of snorkeling and diving?

plus one for stuart coves. I did the shark dive. we also went on the 3 reef snorkel tour which was phenomenal. It included a stop a the shark feeding spot too.
Curacao had good snorkeling from the beach of the sunscape hotel. I would like to do Bonaire sometime, i hear it is great for snorkeling and shore diving.

Maho Bay on St. John has great snorkeling. Especially if you want to see sea turtles. The bay floor is covered in sea grass which is perfect for turtles. Also saw various types of fish including a roughly 100 lb grouper.

West Bay Beach is great. Iron Shore Grill is a great restaurant and there are restaurants and dive shops up and down the beach. Banana donuts are the best.
Overall the island is very affordable with some really good restaurants. Cal's Temporary Cantina is fantastic and what Cal lacks in personality he makes up with great food.
Coxen Hole is a shithole of a town. Avoid at all costs but I've been all over the rest of the island with zero worries.
