Ski Trip to Jackson Hole - Tell me your experiences
I will be taking my family on a ski trip in February '19. We are strongly considering Jackson Hole. The only other option would be Steamboat Springs.

Tell me all of your experiences in Jackson Hole. Pros and Cons and everything else.

TIA

Hope your family is comprised of decently skilled skiers. Not the most family friendly mountain around, especially compared to Steamboat. Check the trail maps, not much green. A lot of the blues might be considered blacks at other mountains.

That being said, it is my favorite place to ski, but I won't be taking my spouse until she gets a lot better at skiing. The town is probably not the best experience for young kids, but can be great if everyone is of drinking age.

Our best family trips were ski-in, ski-outs at Steamboat and Whistler. Super easy and fun for all.

Jackson Hole is going to be a lot harder terrain than Steamboat. Only a few greens on the entire mountain compared to Steamboat.

Steamboat is more family friendly on the slopes but both places have options for children.

I went to Jackson last season and have gone to Steamboat twice this year.

If you go to Jackson I would stay at Teton Village. Pretty much ski in and ski out everywhere you go. Mangy Moose is a cool spot and you can go into town of Jackson for some different vibes. Million dollar cowboy bar is cool and snake river grill is an upscale restaurant.

Just went in early december and had a great time, would highly recommend staying in teton village. Here's my review thread, not sure why the images stop showing up after a certain point... LINK

As said, unless your family are good skiers or willing to try very steep hills then you may be better to look elsewhere. It's also one of the more expensive mountains to fly into, stay, and lift tickets are high.

Given that I love Teton Village and it's regular ranked as the best or top 2 ski mountains in North America. Jackson Hole also routinely ranks in the top 2 in total snow for the year.

I haven't been around to many other places to ski, but if you are there for just 3-5 nights there are plenty of things to do with kids if you are going to ski half the time or more. Go the town for part of a day, there's the elk reserve where you can take a horse drawn sled into the middle of 1000s of elk that migrate down for the winter to the valley, and plenty of other things to do.

Steamboat is a nice resort with many different terrains and great snow.

Jackson Hole Mountain resort is a beast. The blue runs are pretty much black anywhere else. Taos may be the only resort that has terrain as difficult. They have great snow as well. There are maybe 3 green runs on the entire mountain so if you have any beginners they may get bored and green to blue is a huge step up at Jackson Hole.

For a family winter park is a great resort.

Thanks everyone for the advice and help. It looks like we’re going to be going to Steamboat for our first time.

Now that we decided on Steamboat, what are some must dos in and around town?

If you’re looking into Jackson Hole, I’d also consider Telluride.

Point me to the exact opposite. I want a mountain that has a lot of blues that might be considered greens at other mountains.

The entire east coast pretty much.

Maybe some resorts in Wisconsin.

Heavenly Lake Tahoe has a lot of easy Blues. Winterpark has a decent mix of easy blues with challenging blues.

This is all relative to being used to resorts in the rockies.

Hot Springs is fun.

They have tubing and a alpine coaster.

How much does a ski vacation cost usually? No idea how to even get started with planning a trip as far as getting equipment and stuff. Does that come in a package deal or is it all separate from lodging?

Not cheap. If you've never gone I'd definitely go to an easier cheaper place first.

But you are looking at around $100/ day in your lift ticket that's access to the mountains. Then $100 or so for gear rental. In Jackson that's more like $250 total for those two. So it's a solid $500 a day or more for a couple outside of flights and hotels.

Shop around and likely price will vary by location and timing for accommodations. Gear rental and lift tickets are never cheap, but it can be a great trip, and worth it.

Breckenridge. If you go late in the season, no one's there, and the slopes are super easy, plus they have snow machines to keep everything from being iced over and slippery. I've been skiing a few times. Brought my wife to Keystone for her first time and she hated it. She got the hang of it, but it took almost the entire trip. Went to Breck a few years later and she had a much better time because she could actually stay on her feet.
