Wife and I would like to plan a ski trip during Mardi Gras break. Neither of us have ever skied. Recommendations?
You know what you might like? Rent a house in Leadville and go to Cooper. Not a lot of amenities at the resort but perfect terrain for beginners and much cheaper than the other options.
You could also do the same thing in Salida and go to Monarch.

A few years back wife and I (never been skiing) went to Stowe, Vermont for Mardi Gras. Flew in and out of Montreal, had a blast.

I see a bunch of recommendations for Steamboat.
Its $245 a day for a lift ticket there. No thanks. Try to stick to around $180 or you're being absolutely jobbed. I stick to under $100 lol.
I don't disagree, they could go to a place like Whitefish, Montana and ski for $80 a day and have ski in/out for $200 a night. Skiing and scenery would be on par with anything in CO, especially for a new skier but it would be a different vibe. Would be great if you want a more laid back experience instead of the glitzy ski town....That is where the price tag comes into play.

Where do you fly in for Whitefish?

When is your trip? I'm headed there March 13-19 and am interested to hear how it is. I've been during the summer and had a great time mountain-biking and am looking forward to the skiing.
We’ve been here for only 24 hours and it’s FANTASTIC. Families and skiing aficionados seem to make up the most of the people I’ve seen here. Feels like a nice, upscale resort instead of “spring break in the snow.” Tons of runs, lots of lifts, great dining options, a little market for essentials, and our room is gorgeous (Shoshone).
I recommend this place to anyone wanting a ski vacation and we just got here.
*I’m a pretty good skier, wife has never been and had lessons this morning.

Utah. Much lower elevation than most all listed in this thread which can be a big deal for those of us that live at or below sea level. A dozen world class resorts within an hour of the SLC airport.
Park City, Deer Valley, Alta, Sundance, Snowbird, Solitude, Beaver, etc.

Our first trip was Durango/Purgatory. It was fairly cheap and had a great time.

Glad to hear it. We stayed in the Summit a couple of summers ago and will be in the Huntley this time. Circle back with food recommendations later if you don't mind. I ate most of my meals in town last time around and none on the mountain.

good ski schools (take lessons; don’t let anyone tell you differently)
I think the big thing for first timers is they don't expect the cost. They show up, ready to sign-up for lessons, & then realize it's too expensive. Do your research before & know how much it will cost. It's worth it

Big Sky dining options
We knocked out the majority of this list.
Everett's on the mountain for lunch was wonderful. You can download the Ramcharger lift as most of the runs down are pretty steep.
Peak’s was our “nice dinner.” Phenomenal food.
Second floor of Vista Hall has great lunch options also.
Cabin Bar and Grill was great for dinner and Montana Jacks was nice for lunch, drinks, and dinner.
Let me know if you have any questions.
I will say this, all the restaurants tell you to use Open Table for reservations but Open Table sucks and everything is always booked. Try it first and book way in advance for all places, but if no luck just go in person.
One night we picked up pizza from Vista Hall (they close at 6) and ate in the lodge with snacks and a movie.

Great info, thanks. When I was there a couple of years ago I think they were building vista hall and it wasn’t even opened. I can’t wait to go.
What were some of your (and your family’s) favorite runs?

Favorite family runs are any off the Explorer lift. The line isn’t as long but it’s a shorter lift. We skied “Lower Mr. K” a hundred times I bet.
After that would be the Swift Current 6 lift. Nice greens with beautiful blues. Lines can be long there but the 6 or 8 person lift can move 6,000 people an hour. The line goes quick.
Both these lifts are very close to each other and walking distance from the Shoshone and Huntley. The Explorer lift is literally out of the back door of Huntley.
