I’ll be in Seattle at the end of may for a conference, with plenty of time for sightseeing. Solo traveler. Wasn’t planning on car rental bc it seemed like public transport was available. Recs on food/things to do/see?

Conference ends around 1p daily. Friday through Sunday, then I’m gonna stay all day Monday too.

Needle. Catch a game at Tmobile. The other two nights, there are a few bars for music and a brewing over looking the bay. On your day off, ferry over the Bainbridge Island.

As much as I've traveled in the PNW, Seattle was never my jam. I enjoyed Portland and Vancouver BC far more, as well as the islands and Olympic Peninsula.
If you can rent a car for one day, I suggest you set out northward and drive up to Everett, Whidbey Island, Deception Pass, ferry to Port Townsend, down the peninsula and back to Seattle. The islands are really cool this time of year. Have lunch at Seabolts Smokehouse on Whidbey. They have some of the freshest crab in the world and it's amazing.

Thats a good suggestion. You can do some whale watching up there, too. There's always groupon deals for it.
I live in Seattle. The city itself doesn't have much tourist appeal. I think the Sky View Observatory in Columbia Tower is a nice alternative to the Space Needle. It's a great view of the whole Puget Sound region from the 73rd floor of the building.
I second the Mariners game recommendation, especially if the weather is cooperating.

Eat at Biang Biang Noodles, Din Tai Fung, and Piroshki Piroshki in Pikes Place. The Starbucks Roastery is worth a visit. Chihuly Gardens and needle can be seen together. Check out the Amazon spheres. On certain days, you can get a tour of them.

Mariners game.
Chihuly Gardens and the Space Needle. I loved the Chihuly glass exhibit.
Bainbridge Island. We went to Bloedel Reserve there. It's a beautiful property where you can spend several hours hiking/walking around.
The Underground Seattle tour was very interesting and I highly recommend it. Basically, the city was elevated and built on top of the old city after a fire in the late 1800s. A lot of history on the tour and you walk around below the city and see the old buildings. Seattle was a crazy, rough and tumble place back then. It was sort of the jumping off point for all those looking for gold in the Klondike.
My adult kids really enjoyed the Museum of Pop Culture. It was ok for me.

Second this. You can take a ferry and it is scenic on the way over. Good brewery, nice restaurants and shops.
Alki Beach area is nice. You can rent a bike or walk. Good restaurants and scenic views.
Pikes Place could be renamed Piss Place. Outdoor homeless shelter, outdoor urinal and drug den in a carnival type atmosphere.
Rattlesnake Ridge is north of Seattle and is a great hike.

No offense but I was shocked at how boring the place is. I think I'd rather hang out in Columbus Ohio if the surroundings weren't so cool.

I guess each to their own. My 28 year old daughter and I loved it. I wouldn't think young kids would enjoy it much. It's mostly history stuff.

Agreed.. I actually did not see your post when I made mine.. . part of our problem was probably the guide.. she was terrible, trying to make puns/jokes the whole time and a lot of them about the sewer "crap" system.. was just not enjoyable

I could totally see how the guide would make all the difference in the world. Unfortunately, there's no guarantees of getting a good one or not.

I love living here but yeah, I don't think it's that amazing a place to vacation unless you're getting out into nature. Pike Place Market isn't that interesting, Space Needle is okay, Underground tour is boring. Lots of good food, interesting neighborhoods, but nothing that really stands out if you're here for a few days. Gotta get out onto the water or into nature to fully appreciate the area IMO.

Visited Seattle last week as my sister in law lives there. Would agree with this statement, downtown isn’t the greatest. Lumen field is pretty cool though. The neighborhoods are nice (Queen Anne, Fremont, Capitol Hill, Alki beach). We walked around U Dub too which was nice. The food scene is pretty awesome. We spent the the rest of our time in Orcas island which was incredible. The area in general is so scenic, I would go back in a heartbeat.
