Will be in San Francisco late May early June for 3 or 4 nights looking for suggestions. Thinking of the Union Square area or Fisherman’s Warf area. Have heard about a lot of homeless people around Union Square. Would like to stay in the $300-350 per night range. We are driving in so when you add the crazy parking fee and the resort fee of most of these places your limited. Have looked into the Lodge at Prersidio which seems awesome with the views and facilities. Kind of secluded but have a shuttle to downtown. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Stayed at the Hyatt (place I think) in fisherman’s wharf and it was perfect

We stayed at the Sheraton near the wharf for $120 a night once. It's a quick walk or a quick Uber to everywhere you will need to go. Lots of conference rooms so it's geared towards business travelers. Rooms seem to fluctuate a good bit.

The Fairmont is also a very nice place to stay. be sure to grab drinks at the Tonga Room there, even if you do not stay there. It's closer to Chinatown than the Wharf. IIRC, the streetcar museum is close by. We really enjoyed seeing that museum. You get up close to the inner workings of the actual street car line engineering.

I would stick to Union Square where most of the hotels are. There is a Marriott about 500 feet away from the Powell Street BART station. Fisherman's wharf is a tourist trap - everything is chincy and overpriced. I would stay away from that area unless you opt for the Alcatraz tour.

I would agree with this. I regretted wasting time at Fisherman's Warf. Seemed like a big tourist trap. Union Square is pretty cool.

Disagree. I don’t like downtown.

Courtyard FW is a good location.

I guess it just depends on what OP is looking to do. Either way, there is plenty of easily accessible transit. There are a lot of homeless in SF particularly in Union Square.

I wouldn't go the Presidio route personally as it is far from the action and kind of a boring area. What about a vrbo in a cool neighborhood like Russian Hill, Haight, etc?

If your issue are the drug addicts and homeless, it’s better to avoid any hotel along Geary, Ellis, O’Farrell, etc. From the intersection of those streets and Market (down to Twitter and Uber HQ), there are plenty of people that will make you uncomfortable.

When I’m in SF for work, I always prefer to stay in one of the hotels on California in Nob Hill, a neighborhood close to a Chinatown, but has easy access to Van Ness when you want to get out of downtown. Not sure if any will be at your price point (there are a lot of factors for SF hotel pricing, including conferences), but check out Scarlet Huntington, Fairmont, Stanford Court, and Intercontinental.

We’ve stayed in Presidio (the inn) for one night on the way to Sonoma. We were a quick uber from Gary danko’s and then took our car to lunch at the Cliff House on the way out of town. The Presidio location allowed for a great morning walk with close views of the Golden Gate Bridge and some gorgeous houses. For the price we enjoyed it.

We’ve also stayed at the W which I think was downtown. But that was years ago and I had an employee discount for Starwood.

We have stayed at the Fisherman's Wharf hotels before and they were fine, but I would rather stay on Union Square, the St. Francis being my favorite. You asked about the homeless people around there. There are plenty of them and they can be aggressive and belligerent, but that is something you just have to put up with. It comes with the territory. And the parking rates are a lot cheaper by the wharf.

I’m not really knowledgeable on hotels in SF, but I would just advise that you not stay near Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s incredibly touristy and naturally the foot traffic is bad.

As far as the homeless problem goes for Union Square, if you find an area devoid of a homeless problem, please report back so I know where to stay for future trips.

We like the Garden Orchard near the gates to Chinatown.

It’s not bad outside of Mission, SoMa and Tenderloin. Mission has incredible food, but is one of the weirder streets I’ve been on in the U.S.
