Wife has a sabbatical for three weeks next year. We are starting to think of where to go. Would either be during spring break since daughter (12) gets two weeks off or summer. We are going to Italy at end of school year this year. Where have you been or want to go for a trip like this? Africa, New Zealand?

I could go anywhere cool for three weeks, that’s a regular vacation. Maybe narrow your options down to a particular continent?

Need more info. If the spring break is 2 weeks, how does that work? You all go together for 2 weeks only? At 12, assume she wouldn't fly over to meet you. Or you all go together for 3 weeks during the summer (THE height of tourist travel in Europe, so crowds could be a consideration).

Budget?

Where do you want to go as a family? What's been discussed?

Any Continent open?

To me, particularly with young kids, you could rule out "Africa or New Zealand". Those are LONG trips.

Top of my head..

Target one area and stay and immerse yourselves. We LOVED the Normandy Region of France. Base in Bayeux and do day trips. Slovenia is my FAVORITE country in the world. Ljubljana is the capital and a beautiful small city. You could do weekend trips to Croatia.

If you can deal with the crowds, Florence would be the obvious location though. So much to see and do. Multiple day trip options. Great access to rail travel.

Norway. Prettiest country I've been to. Check out Bergen.

For two weeks at Spring Break, I think that these are both great ideas. If you went to South Africa, you could spend a few days in Cape Town and then do a self-driving tour in Kruger National Park, with stays in the camps at whatever level of luxury fits you.

In New Zealand, I've only been to the South Island, but the peak travel period will be over and it will still be great hiking weather. I took my daughter and niece in 2019 in early March, and we hiked the Routeburn Trek and also up to the Mueller Hut, and both of those were fantastic. Did a tour of a glowworm cave and Milford Sound and those were great.

Currently on a sabbatical myself Wife and I are in our early 30s and making a run through South America (with Panama City and CDMX included near the end to get us closer to Chicago). Currently in Rio and heading to Buenos Aires tomorrow. Definitely a bit more of an intense trip if you have children, so totally get if that's not what you're looking for.

No budget limit but nothing too crazy. We are doing Barcelona with Italy this summer.

If we go spring break we would probably just go for two weeks

France.

Without context, it’s hard to tell what you enjoy. But if yall enjoy food, history, beaches, mountains, wine, city, country, etc. France has it.

And it’s super easy to drive in France or take the trains.

Now if you want to expand your horizons and give your child an experience, Japan for two weeks.

Yeah. France or Japan

With 2 weeks+ I’d do Southeast Asia. Your daughter will be 13 so that’s old enough. You could do Australia too but that’s expensive as hell.

I’d set some flight price trackers for multiple destinations and go wherever the dollar and flights are the best deal.

ETA: I’ve never done it so I’m
Not some crazy Southeast Asia person but that’s a good amount of time for a trip like that and I think it would be amazing.
