Road trip - hotel booking

We are heading to Branson in a few weeks. Due to a recent surgery we are going to break the drive up into two days. I want to book the road trip room in advance while my husband wants to just wing it. Which is more economical booking in advance or walking in and staying in what is available? Plan on stopping a little south of Little Rock.

If I knew for sure that I wanted to stay in / around Little Rock I would book a hotel in advance that is conveniently located along the highway I would be traveling.
The reason wouldn’t be cost so much as it would be a tiny bit more convenient to make that decision in advance rather than searching hotel apps to compare prices when I am driving there.
But if you’re not smartphone savvy and you would be picking whatever hotel you came upon without a chance to compare, then I definitely would book in advance.
But either way, I don’t think you’ll see a difference worth stressing over. You’ll be in the Little Rock area - not Manhattan. Most of the chain hotels are going to cost about what you would expect whether you book in advance or not.

Definitely book in advance. Will save you 100$+ most likely. I would use Priceline. Those express deals can save you a fortune.

A lot of it depends on where they want to stay. I see hotels in Little Rock that I could book for tonight that cost less than $50. I would stay at those places but maybe she wouldn't. But there are nicer places that are still pretty reasonable. You can still come out fine last minute.
That said, ultimately I do agree with you. Given a choice, I would book in advance.

I use Hotwire or Priceline Express/Hot Deals all the time. Unless there is a shortage of rooms, prices will be cheap the day of. Maybe even cheaper than reserving in advance. If you think bout it, these are the rooms that haven't been rented that day. Those Hot Deals allow hotels to get some revenue for those rooms instead of nothing.

What route are you taking to Little Rock? I travel there often on 167 and there isn't really a good spot to stay until you hit Little Rock, so when you say south of LR where are you looking?
I also usually book my room the day of but that's because I never know exactly where I'll end up. In your shoes I would book ahead. The DoubleTree, Marriott, and Hampton Inn are all nice downtown locations. If you don't want to stay downtown, I recommend the Hampton, Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, and Courtyard in West Little Rock.

There is a Hampton Inn just off the interstate in Arkaldphia. It is an hour south of LR.
We stayed there once. A typical HI; lowest cost room on their web site is ~ $80 or 20,000 points.
We book in advance but it may be while driving and only a few hours from the hotel. I have had zero success in walking into the lobby and trying to negotiate a good deal.
A couple of times I was lucky to find a room as there were big events going on that I wasn’t aware of.
