This is awesome.. I'm heading to Sorrento and Positano with the wife the first week of June. So pumped and ready to get back. Was in Rome last June and loved every minute. Flying into Rome again and jumping on the train.

Great info here. Thanks!!

Great report. It brings back some wonderful memories. We have been to these cities, seen most at these sights and have eaten in many of the same restaurants. In Positano we ate at Chez Black, Ristaurante Max and La Sopnda at Le Sirinuse. We did not stay at Le Sineruse, but we spent so much time in the bars and restaurants there, the staff thought we were staying there. Can't wait to go back.

They really do. Everything that has to do with food & wine is all about experience.

That Brunello di Montalcino should be delicious. Don't let it age too long, as they are meant to be drunk at 3-5 years old

I thought Brunello was good for 8-20'ish years?

They are. I'm just relaying what was told to me when we were tasting wines in Montalcino. We were at Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, and the peak time to drink a brunello is five years, with better vintages taking longer. A rosso is supposed to age three years before drinking.

Yeah. I'd let it age a little. There's not a Brunello that I'd drink in the release year.

That Brunello was released this year. It's a 5 year process from growth until release. So it should probably age another 3-5 minimum to reach its potential. 2012 isn't known as a great Brunello year. We were fortunate enough to be there in 2015 for the stellar 2010 crop. The 2015 vintage is supposed to be another great one so I'd like to visit in 2020 for sure.

Great review! Thank you.

+/- $10,000. Two weeks.

flights at $445/pp. Points covered one person
Early seat selection $138
Grape tour was about $360
Tenuta Torciano tour was about $360
Walks of Italy (3 total) $632
Le Sirenuse $2700
La Sponda Dinner $500
Air BnB Rome $566
Air BnB Florence $512
Italia Rail Tickets $344
Taxi in Capri $150
Rainbow Limos $300

That there comes out to about $7000

Dinner every night was $75-$120 on average probably. Twice in Rome we ate at the condo because we were exhausted.
We only really had two insanely expensive dinners. La Sponda ($500) and Al Palazzo (think it was $200) which were both in Positano.

Lunches were probably $50-$75. Again, you don't have to drink a glass, or two, of wine every meal. Or maybe you do.....

I did also buy two cases of wine at probably about $1500 after shipping, but I don't count that as a true expense to the trip. That was just me lubed up

Gah damn. How'd you find flights for $445/person? Flew direct from Houston or another major hub? When I went last year it was $1,100/person to fly MSY to Newark then Newark to Milan. Return route was Rome to D.C. then back to MSY.

Back in November there was some ridiculous arse sale. I guess promoting the new direct flight out of MSY. That was the catch, having to fly in/out of Rome. It was still significantly cheaper to:

04:30 car service
06:40 train to Roma Termini
08:15 train to FCO

That day coming home was long. I guess I was up for an effective 28 hours. I probably napped for about two, tho.
