Looking to head down there in November. I currently have the Hyatt Zilara and the Excellence El Carmen booked. At El Carmen we have an oceanfront swim up suite. At Zilara we just have an ocean view; which looks like it is not really that close but oh well.
I am reading really mixed things about El Carmen online. One person loves it. The next got the shits and the food is the worst thing they have ever had.
Curious if anyone in this group has been to either or both. El carmen has the better room set up, but my takeaway is that the beach kind of sucks. Zilara seems to have a better beach, hard to find bad reviews, and apparently the food is well above averages.
I appreciate any comments or feedback.

I can't help you with Punta Cana, but we have stayed in La Romana twice
(once at the Hilton La Romana and once at the Dreams Dominicus La Romana.
Both were fantastic. The Hilton was nicer overall, but the water was not as nice as Dreams (Hyatt). Quick boat ride to Sanoa and Catalina.
Wish I could be more help, but truth be told, you can't go wrong with either.

I've stayed at El Carmen. Food was good, not great but definitely not the worst Ive ever had.

We actually just bailed on the DR. We are going to go to Le Blanc in Cancun. We'll be back home by 2:25 and if it's a night game, I might be frisky enough to drive straight up for the BAMA / LSU game.

Smart choice. I had the Imperial Suite at Excellence El Carmen. Food was ok and the place was nice but the beach sucks.

Okay, take word of advice from the guy who just got back from a rather large group trip from Excellence El Carmen. 37 of us.
We all did the same exact thing. Woke up, at breakfast, went to the beach around 9 or 10 AM, ate lunch, went to the pool around 1 or 2, then dinner around 6 and the night club at 11 PM until 1 AM. 36 people. Half the people loved it, other half hated it.
Main complaints were food was "okay", and that they ran out of cold canned beer every day at the beach and pool.
It was my 2nd time to Excellence and it wasn't as good as my first trip 6 years ago. I felt as if they were short staffed and also it wasn't as kept up. The rooms are still the nicest that I've seen in the DR, and my only complaint about the beach is the seaweed in the water, but every resort on the north side of DR has that same problem.

Food at EEC is pretty good for an AI I think. It doesn’t have the best beach, but if you have an ocean front swim out you’ll spend all your time in your pool and the view looking out at the ocean is incredible. Waiters will come by and bring you drinks too

Wife and I went to Zilara last winter. We had a swim up which we hardly used. It was a good time. My wife likes a tub in the room which we did not have. It's pretty sleepy at night if you are looking for nightlife its not the place. We liked that it was all new and the theming in the restaurants was very good. The indian place in the train car was our fave. We enjoyed the little water park, we hit the lazy river every day. It's well themed. Zilara spa was great and the gym was better than any place i've ever stayed. Seriously that good. We had club level but we didn't notice that much difference. The alcohol is bit better but I don't really care because i'm drinking frozen crap all day lol.
