Thinking of surprising my parents with a trip to Europe for their anniversary
IYO which cities be more enjoyable for two 60 year olds
Italian cities would be Venice/Rome/Florence

Could I substitute Venice for somewhere else like Modena or Amalfi? Because if so I’d pick Italy.

If they have never been to Europe, I would say Italy. Don't listen to the Venice haters. It is an amazing city, as long as they get lost.
Globus has a tour that covers those three cities, plus stops in Assisi, Siena, and Pisa. I took it 7 years ago and it was fantastic.
All you have to do is write the check. They do everything else.

We also loved Venice. Just wander the city. It’s amazing. I’d also vote Italy.

Wife and I did the Prague/Vienna/Buda trip last a June, while great it’s not Italy. We preferred Italy over this recent Eastern Europe trip. Big 3 in Italy and you win the award for best kid - hands down.

Put me down for Italy. I am going to Florence (Tuscany)and Venice for the third time in a few weeks. It is one of my favorite trips. I did enjoy Vienna though. They can't go wrong either way. I have not been further east than Vienna so I would look forward to visiting Prague and Budapest someday. And I am in their age bracket. Almost.

Is it their first time to Europe? How is your parents mobility? Do they like to be a traveler or they more like cruise shippers? Rome and Venice can be a rat race in the summer time, also very hot and with that many people if their mobility isn't great they may not enjoy themselves. Definitely try to go early fall or very late summer with people not based on school schedules if you can.

Italy has the best food, gelato, tiramisu, and espresso. Food is very important for most people.

This. I fully understand that 99% of people would choose Italy, but it's never been high on my list for whatever reason.

Nah, they've been to Paris. Thought it was just okay. They've also been to a few places in Asia. Hong Kong and Thailand. Loved both

Great time of year. How do you think they will like the Italians? Have you ever been? Some people really hate the machismo culture. I'm not saying it's that bad, but I can see some people in their 60s+ really not enjoying it.
I would agree the food in Italy is great, but Austria and Czech Republic will be a slower more relaxed environment and they have good food too.

I have no idea what this means....and I've been to Tuscany, Puglia, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Reggio Calabria, Sicily, Pulia, Lazio. The Italians are extremely tourist-friendly people, and many people (esp in the south) have family ties to the US. Generally speaking, the Italians are respectful and kind to the elderly (though I don't mean to imply that 60 is in any way elderly).
If they weren't thrilled with Paris, perhaps you should adjust the potential itinerary to include some time spent outside of the cities you listed...a few days in a smaller town or at an agriturismo in the countryside.

I've did a Rome/Florence/Venice trip back in 2015 with stops in Orvieto and Siena. Highly recommended. I need to get it together and post a trip review on here, but I'll have to dig up some pictures.
The biggest tip I have is to make sure you get a tour guide that can skip lines. Nothing is a bigger travel boner killer than having to wait hours to get into a museum/church.

I actually found that the people in Italy were very rude and not tourist-friendly. It seemed this way in every city we visited in Italy.
As for the original question, you can't go wrong with either trip. I was actually thinking Prague/Vienna/Budapest will be my next European trip, but also thinking Porto/Madrid/Barcelona.

Wow--I've had the complete opposite experience on every trip. I speak very rudimentary Italian, my spouse a little bit more. Maybe this helps? But I've found the Italians far friendlier than the French (and I'm fairly fluent in that language). It's not that the French are rude (some are), just that they're not as open as the Italians.
Now, if you're talking about standing in an orderly line and taking turns--no, the Italians simply don't do that. It's every man for himself, and watch out for the old lady elbows.
