Visiting Louisiana Memorial Day Weekend and plan to take the family on a plantation and swamp tour. Any recommendations? New Orleans area is preferred, but open to venturing out to other parts of the state.

It depends on what type of tour you want.

If you want the opulent country club atmosphere tour, then go to Houma's House.

Houma's House

If you want the bitter realization of what plantations were about, then go to Laura Plantation.

Laura Plantation

Oak Alley is also good.

Houmas was great. Was in town for an LSU baseball game and drove down there for a few hours, it was amazing and the grounds are beautiful.

Like the others have said, Houmas House should not be missed. They have a couple of restuarants on the grounds, if you eat there, skip the one with the buffet and hit the Carriage House. Lots of good menu items but the eggplant and crabmeat is really good

Nottoway may be the nicest house.

Oak Alley has the most impressive exterior.

Houmas House is nice and has the best restaurant.

Check their hours with it being a holiday weekend
Houma house make a reservation to eat
Grounds are nice and they have a walkway to miss river views
Christmas decorations are neat around the holidays
Stay on river road and ride down to Manresa site they have the lined oak trees to the river levee than you could either cross river to oak alley or cross sunshine bridge and head to nottoway

Houmas is the best experience by far. Destrehan has a good 1 hour tour. You could easily combine them in a day.

As stated before, you should be at Houmas for lunch at Carriage House....linger for some cocktails at the Turtle Bar to stroll the grounds with them.

IMHO go to the Rural Life Center at Burden or the State Museum in BR to learn more about South LA culture.

Plantation houses are pretty..

D day museum in New Orleans is every bit as good as the Smithsonians in DC.
