Planning to visit Washington DC a good bit over the next few years, pointers?
My daughter starts GWU in August. Assuming she's there for the next few years, I'll be visiting there at least a couple times per year.

We visited the school and the area last Fall, so I have a slight grasp of the area.

Looking for pointers on places to eat, things to do, places to stay. Already have a flight and hotel booked for Labor Day weekend, but still open for advice as I'll refer back to this thread in the future. Staying at the Hyatt Place/Georgetown this trip.

She's hoping to room on the Mt Vernon campus, but I decided it would be handier to be near Foggy Bottom for more things within walking distance. I have no issues Ubering anywhere as well.

the one on 24th? Very nice. The Blue Duck Tavern is there and is a Michelin restaurant

Foggy Bottom is way easier to navigate without a car and she'd probably enjoy it more

For food: My copy/paste post

The weather might not be the best, but Thanksgiving is really quiet up there. Everyone leaves the city for the long weekend, but all the sights were still open. Restaurants weren't nearly as packed, and you can get reservations at nice restaurants for Thanksgiving if needed. City parking enforcement allowed free parking in metered spots.

I’m a fan of Central Michael Richard for easy really good food. If you’re a beer fan, burgersbeerburbon at DC Quarter has a good beer selection.

DC area resident here.

Biggest question to me is how are you looking to budget your time and money?

I can crush some oysters at Old Ebbitt’s grill. Go to the bar all the way in the back and on the right

Sorry, life got busy, and I think I forgot about my own thread.

Good references here, that I will refer to in the future.

Hmm... I appreciate your concern, and I ask myself that question a few times a week as my life has changed a lot in the last year, and still is. Is there a specific issue that I should be concerned with as I visit DC? I'm thinking my priority will be just spending time with my daughter when I visit, but it'd be good to know a variety of options to spend available time and money on any given visit.

Making a quick trip to DC next week before I head on to NYC. Does DC do boiled/steamed crabs like Maryland does? If so, what are some of the best spots around town for some solid crabs/oysters?

Hang out in Alexandria Va (especially at night). One of my favorite places to go.

The fam and I are staying in Alexandria the next 2 nights. The traffic here is like a Sunday drive compared to DC. I was only cussed out twice today downtown so I’m making progress. Frick these circle interchanges with a rusty spoon.

I actually like them....when people know how to drive in them. Much quicker than normal intersections. Of course, Ive driven around Washington Circle every day for 9 years so I'm used to it

I pissed MANY people off yesterday. My wife changed the voice on my WAZE app to sound like the Cookie Monster. “Take the 4th right at the roundabout...let’s count them...like cookies nom nom nom”.

This cracked me up.

DC resident here. The traffic circles are great, as long as you know how to drive in them.

DC has grown a lot in the restaurant scene over the past decade. A ton of great restaurants.

Free museums. Great restaurants. Lots of parks. Wineries a short distance away in Virginia. Hundreds of miles of bike trails. Sporting events. Concerts. There is no shortage of things to do in the DC area.

1. Definitely second a trip to Mount Vernon
2. Rock Creek Park is excellent for hikes right in the middle of the city.
3. Harpers Ferry in West Virginia (about thirty minutes away) is an awesome day trip.
4. Great Falls, which has access in Maryland and Virginia is a fantastic park. We went on the Virginia side, which had great hiking trails and waterfalls. Really recommend this.
5. Georgetown to walk around is nice if the weather is nice
6. Of course, you could spend weeks if not more exploring all of the museums and monuments on the Mall.

DC was a great trip and we definitely could have spent several more days exploring. NY is whipping my butt right now. Two more days to get the metro system down cold.
