First trip to Europe with family, looking at Paris for 7 days (9 w/travel days). General thoughts on weather that time of year for anyone who has been.

7 days feels like enough time for a day trip or two.

thanks!

It’ll be cold, but not unbearably so. Sounds like a great trip. Enjoy!

I have been a bunch of times and it is usually in the spring. We went twice in 2019, once in April and once in November. In November the weather was fine much of the time but we did have a few days when it was cool and drizzly. Paris is gorgeous in the spring but I also remember being rained on during that time. There is no bad time to be in Paris. It is my favorite city in the world to visit.

The following are some of my favorite day trips

Reims in the heart of Champagne country is a high speed train ride away. Go there if you are in to champagne and don’t miss the beautiful and historic cathedral.

Versailles is an easy rer train ride away which you can catch at the St Michel metro stop near Notre Dame.

Fontainebleau is also a train ride away. It is like a slightly scaled down version of Versailles It is a little harder to get to but it won’t be as crowded. You can get in both with your multi day museum pass which you will want.

Monet’s house and gardens in Geverny is a train ride away but they may not be open that time of year.

thanks for the reply... i have miles for airfare and think a good handle on AirBnB.

one thing i can't nail down is cost per day for food, museums, and transportation. I don't want Le-McDonalds, but not breaking bank either.

thanks man!

Cost for transportation is cheap because they have a great subway system in the metro. A carnet is a package of 10 tickets sold at a discount.

Definitely get a multi day museum pass. Not only do you save money it allows you to cut the lines.

With regard to food, we always splurge big time on food because in my opinion Paris is the best restaurant city in the world but we also enjoy the neighborhood cafés and casual bistros which are wonderful.

I have been for that length of time during Thanksgiving.

Yes it’s a little cold but not crazy. It’s fine. Also rains a bit more but we didn’t have a ton of issues.

My favorite city. Enjoy

One other thing about cost. In November we got a fantastic deal on airfare and hotel compared to what it usually costs in the spring.

We’re trying to do this also OP, I have a hard time with work doing extended trips in the summer so we are going for 13-15 days from Veterans Day through Thanksgiving.

Trying to figure out what we should do about airfare? I’m finding flights for $750-900 right now. This summer is crazy expensive, but I think that’s demand and crew shortages. I’m thinking some deals will still be given for the fall/ winter?

ETA: I’m trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and cash in on flights or just be patient and don’t worry?

Ditto on flight...i am locked into Delta due to miles but AA looks to be best deal coming out of FL if i could change. looks like 1.2k (w/o miles) for dates that work for us. Not a deal, but not killer.

also worried about booking now, etc...

As someone who travels very infrequently (both domestically and internationally), $1200 seems pretty normal for a flight to Europe.

$450 flights can still be had to Europe from east of the Mississippi. Those are deals certainly, but not unheard of. I’m hoping for $550 flights for a non hub to Paris. I can do Delta through Atlanta or a couple other options. Now im not trying to boast but I consider myself very good at finding and waiting for flight deals, I have like 8 flight trackers set lol.

CDG- paris is also a major hub/ airport. Easier to find a good deal.

Good insight on the deals, I am too old to red-eye and multiple stops so cuts down my options (yeah, red eye is required going there)

Been to Paris in November, not terribly cold. Had a day or two with nice sunny weather, and one with cold rain . Bring a good rain jacket

While I went during a separate September visit to Paris, I second the suggestion for a visit to Reims.

Really enjoyed the short 1 hour train ride through the country . The champagne houses are great, cathedral tour is French only and the only way to see the countryside view from the top (worth it though)

I have 3 kids under 9 for this trip, I ain’t doing that stuff either! I won’t ever take a flight over with a stop in Europe either unless completely necessary. So much better to take an extra flight in the states and arrive by 10am the day of your arrival to your destination city then arrive at 2pm or later potentially. That jet lag and being tired is rough that first day with a late arrival.

Airlines just run deals to fill up especially for off peak times. These can only last for 1-2 days sometimes, sometimes less. Sometimes for weeks. If you set a google flight tracker or use one of the other services you can catch them.

Eh. I regularly find flights from NOLA in the 500 range.

Are you in St Pete? I don’t know about Orlando or Tampa airports, but I believe there are directs from Miami to Paris, my wife gets Scott’s flight deals and routinely gets deals from Miami. Frustrates the shite out of me because we are in the panhandle with no good flight options or cheap to Miami so I keep telling her I don’t give a shite about Miami flight deals it does us no good! But I’d drive the 4.5 hours or so from St Pete to Miami international for a direct flight compared to a connection.

It will be great fun--cool, so nice for long walks around the city.

RE: food, if you're renting an apartment, look up the nearest street market to your place, and nearest supermarket and bakery. Supermarket for basics (eggs, butter, jam, snacks, juice, water, coffee grounds/pods), and street market for some precooked stuff like roasted chickens (and the potatoes beneath). Make a bakery routine--send out a kid (or adult and kid) out each AM for croissants/pastry/baguette. Enjoy those while everyone gets dressed and figures out what the day will hold. Will save you LOADS of money over cafe breakfasts, and by the end of a week, the bakery ppl will know you.

Post the general area where you're staying and we can make food recs for your "home" base.

Funny you mention time of arrival. I’m used to traveling to Asia for work and to northern Ireland as well. But generally that’s on a work budget so I am less concerned about when my room is gonna be ready.

My gut feeling what is to get a flight that arrives around lunch time we get in from the airport to the Airbnb we can shop in crash for the first day and then start vacation the next. Worried about getting in at 8 AM would be stuck with our bags and no Airbnb for hours

Smart thinking--no one wants to be minding a pile of luggage for hours on end. There is indeed luggage storage at the big train stations but that's an added expense. if everyone has 2 bags, it might be cheaper to book the ABB for the previous day just to check in early. And see if the ABB will allow early check in--some do for a fee.

God bless you.

Landing in Paris and getting squared away on your first day after travelling all night will be fun.

Enjoy.

Make sure you have decent rain gear for all (heads & feet included).

Cool/cold rain can happen there at that time of year.

Bon Voyage!
