Tell me about Oaxaca. Is it a fun place to visit? How safe is it? Headed there for an event later this year and know literally nothing about it.

Are you going to Oaxaca City or somewhere like Puerto Escondido?
It's absolutely safe and amazing. Oaxaca City is pretty large and feels like a city in Mexico.. but the old downtown area is amazing and offers excellent walking, drinking, eating, and shopping. There are also plenty of tour operators downtown in Oaxaca city where you can book trips out to mezcal makers, Hierve el Agua, etc..
The one thing that I really noticed in Oaxaca is that it's really more of a tourism destination for Mexico City residents and such. It's geared more toward Mexican tourists than Americans.. so don't expect eveyrone to speak English. Very very few people spoke English when we were there, even folks in the hospitality industry.
It's one of my top 5 travel destinations, and I hope to get back there soon.

We are going next month so we have been doing a lot of research on Oaxaca (specifically Oaxaca City). Looking forward to following this thread.
I recommend watching the episode of Somebody Feed Phil last season when he went to Oaxaca. Lots of great looking places to eat on that episode.

It's the epicenter of mezcal so lots of good artesenal producers in the area. Here is a list of the best mezcalerias in Oaxaca LINK
We went 10 years ago, and that's what started our voyage into mezcal. It will spoil you so, so badly being there because bottles that would cost $100+ in the states (almost any cuishe or madrecuishe or tobala variety) can be had for $20-30 there (or at least it was like that last time we went.. probably has gone up some). Cuish is a great mezcaleria (which is in the provided link).
It's also the birthplace of mole... so you can go to restaurants that have like 20 different types of mole and order samplers. And the tlayudas... don't get me started.

Best city that I have visited in Mexico.
We ate breakfast and alunch at Boulenc... it's fantastic. Google Maps- Boulenc
Don't miss grabbing lunch at Pasillo de Humo (might be a little intimidating at first, but well worth the experience.) Google maps (Pasillo De Humo)

Went there about 2 years ago. Great city, great food. Seemed very safe - even with a rental car and lots of exploring by foot.
Make sure you order the chapulines, they even have them at the airport.
And the mole is a must as well.
The market in downtown is a pretty interesting - definitely worth strolling through.

Good! This is literally our main concern.

Very high on my list to travel to. Everyone I know who has been loved it. Food is great, city is beautiful, and it is very safe (not just by Mexico standards).
Going to Mexico City in a few weeks, so probably going to hit up Oaxaca over the summer.

Bumping this thread because we leave for Mexico City then Oaxaca City on Friday. Really looking forward to the trip.
Any other places posters here recommend checking out that hasn’t already been mentioned?

Beautiful and safe area - but of course, use caution!
TIP: When visiting anywhere Mexico, don't risk Montezuma's Revenge. I've never experienced it, but others in my a party have. Always drink bottled everything and for cocktails, straight up, no ice cubes!

That can be tricky, though, and if you travel enough you WILL get it. I've never gotten food poisoning from borderline risky stuff. The few times I've had it I have no idea what the source was. But also, don't be stupid. One example is ceviche in Oaxaca. I avoided it while half the group I was with ate it and were sick as dogs. Oaxaca is not a coastal town, use common sense. I did eat local food in the Oaxaca market with no problems, and it was damn good and cheap. Also, take some Cipro and electrolytes with you. I recently had food poisoning in Thailand - no obvious source. In about 16 hours I was 100% again after Cipro and some electrolyte packets.
Oaxaca is great. A fun place to walk around and see the sights. As said, it's the place that Mexicans go for vacation. Cheap, good food, scenic, safe, nearby ruins, local mezcal, cool churches, what's not to like? Some elevation so it's a bit cooler and the humidity is low.
