NYC for Braves/Yankees - Hoping for some recommendations (traveling with 75 yr old)

Taking my father in law (Yankees fan) to the Braves/Yankees series next month. He's 75 yrs old, appreciates some good food, but has otherwise been to the city before on many occasions. Don't want to stay in the Bronx and will be using the subway to get around. If anyone has specific recommendations on neighborhoods to stay in that would allow us close proximity to some good pizza, italian food, and sandwiches, then that would be helpful!
Thanks.
Thanks.

I have taken the subway to Yankee Stadium. It is easy and you feel safe because most other riders are wearing Yankee gear and you can tell they are going to the game.
If you want to stay near Times Square, John’s Pizza and Carmine’s are a block away from each other on 44th Street. Carmine’s may not have the most gourmet Italian food in town but it is very popular. John’s is one of my favorites.

Since you will be on the D train already, you could take it to Fordham and walk a few blocks to Arthur Ave (the Bronx’s Little Italy). I would not stay out there but plenty of good Italian restaurants, bakeries, gelato shops.

I'd stay within a few blocks of Grand Central so you can just hop on a subway. The Dylan, The Renwick, Hyatt GC all good hotels right there.
Grand Central Oyster Bar is great, Pietro’s is an old-school Italian spot, The Shakespeare is a good place for drinks and a light bite.

Since you said he has been to the City many times and doesn't need the full experience I would stay somewhere near a 4 train stop, its an express with a Yankee Station stop. I don't have any specific recommendations but look near Union Square Station or Grand Central Station. Even staying near Battery Park (Bowling Green Station I think) its only a 30 min ride.

John’s pizza is overrated. It’s the same as every other pizza place but with a 2 hr line

I’ve been a bunch of times and last time I went it wasn’t great, but I’ve never waited more than 15 minutes.
