Need help deciding between Nashville and Atlanta for a father/son trip

My son is 8, and we’re taking our first (hopefully annual) father/son trip. Both cities are about equal distance from Birmingham, but I can’t decide which would be better for a quick overnight trip.
Atlanta:
Aquarium and Fernbank Natural History Museum are what I’m thinking we’ll do. He’d love the Coke museum but sodas give him really bad stomach aches. Downside to Atlanta is it’s a really large city and traffic can be a nightmare. I also don’t like what I’ve been reading about crime issues.
Nashville:
I much prefer Nashville as a city but outside of the zoo, what really is there to do for kids? I thought about the country music museum but he’s not really at a point where he’d recognize bands/artists/etc.
Any thoughts or suggestions for either city? We’d get there around 10am-ish and leave the evening of the next day.

if you think the traffic in Atlanta is bad, nashvegas says hold my beer.
that shouldn’t be a factor in deciding between those two
pick one, then go to other next year. Both have plenty to do

For someone that age? Zoo. Nashville Shores. Science Center. Our kids loved the outdoor activities, so there's plenty of hiking and kayaking within 2 hours. Rent a pontoon boat up on Dale Hollow Lake.

I live in Woodstock, GA
I would not bring my son anywhere near downtown Atlanta right now.
It’s really sad...but it’s the truth

Nashville Sounds games are fun with kids. I haven't been ye,t but Gaylord Opryland has installed a huge waterpark that looks like a lot of fun for an 8 year old. Hiking at Percy Warner Park is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Safe for a canoe trip at Harpeth River. But yes, I feel Nashville is more for a 25-35 year old than an 8 year old.

Way more stuff for a kid that age in Atlanta vs Nashville.
Atlanta: White Water, Six Flags over GA, Aquarium, Fernbank, Puppetry Arts, Zoo Atlanta, raft the Hooch, Puppetry Arts, Legoland, etc
Nashville: The Zoo, Science Adventure Center, Nashville Shores, ???

Stone Mountain ya'll!
What's the name of the museum that has a basement with all these old, but working, pinball machines? Took the kids there years ago and had a blast.

If he's into sports, I'd do Atlanta. Hit the aquarium, a Braves game, and possibly a United game if their schedules allow. Take him to The Varsity for lunch if he likes hot dogs.
My best friend lives in Atlanta and I go over there 2 or 3 times a year. The traffic can be bad, but the crime is no worse than Birmingham. Traffic in Nashville is also awful.

I live in Forsyth county and bring my kids(2 and 5) downtown about every other week. Dont be skurred
OP traffic isnt that bad, especially for what you ar doing. Fernbank is great for kids. Aquarium is okay, but inside and cool. maybe consider renting bikes or electric ride-ons to cruise around piedmont park and the beltline. Braves game. Zoo has their newer African exhibit. There is also Tellus a ways north of the city on 75. Southeastern Railway museum in Duluth

Atlanta is probably the better trip for a kid as you have the Aquarium, Coke Museum, and College Football Hall of Fame all within a stone's throw. That right there would cover most of your day.
Nashville has a lot - i.e., the Zoo, Adventure Science Center, Country Music Hall of Fame, Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood, The Ryman, Music Row, Tennessee State Museum, The Hermitage, tons of Civil War sites and battles, but like you said, it may not be the best for a kid.
You can always check out a Braves game too when in Atlanta.

Go to Chattanooga instead. Much smaller than either of the other two.
Tons of stuff for the kid too.

It seemed like the same ole ATL to me when I was there a few weeks ago.
But yeah I would do ATL and go to Braves game. Kid will love the park. Just get seats in the SHADE.

Take him to Gulf Shores. The OWA is awesome for kids.

I mentioned to my wife tonight about some of y’all being scared of downtown ATL. She laughed hysterically. She’s down there more than my self. Alone or with the kiddos.

Me? My wife took ours downtown all the time when we lived in ATL. I hate the traffic.

Crime is similar in both cities. I don't think it should get much consideration.
Atlanta has the most to offer in terms of kids attractions. Aquarium is world class. Zoo is ok. Fernbank is great. Braves. ATL United. Six Flags. College football HOF. Puppetry Arts.
If you go to Nashville, the Adventure Science Center is really fun. Preds games beat any other live sport in the region. Zoo is decent. Kayaking and canoeing within 1 hour drive. Minor League Baseball.
Chattanooga is with considering too. Great aquarium and I think the zoo is decent. Easy access to amazing hiking, swimming holes, water falls. High Point Climbing. Creative Discovery Museum. Minor League baseball.
