This is much more of a tip about the long drive than the areas near Mt. Rushmore, but depending on your path and how much time you have, you could stop in Kansas City, Dallas, and Branson (which I’ve never been to, but it is a popular town for tourists).

Obviously Dallas is on another path, but the difference between the paths is minimal, so I would take one on the way up and one on the way down.

KC is a pretty cool city, and if your kids are old enough to like museums, KC has some good ones, as well as excellent barbecue.

I don’t know if the environmentalists still allow this, but the fireworks at Mt Rushmore for 4th of July (actually were on July 3 when we went) were spectacular. Only issue was we got there about 2:00 to claim a spot for viewing, then had to wait 7 hours or more for the fireworks. Would do it again though. The fireworks were that good. Sitting below the busts, fireworks launched from top of the heads and they filled the entire sky it seemed.

Went in 2000 or 2001, so I don’t know what they are doing now.

A route we take on motorcycles is up through Ft.Worth on I45
and take 287w northwest of Fort Worth up thru Childress on to Amarillo. Good roads and not a lot of traffic. Stay on 287 into Oklahoma and Colorado (287/385). Many routes available to avoid Denver etc on into South Dakota from there.

Be sure to have a Hot Granny while you’re in Custer.

Deadwood was an unexpected surprise for us. A cool town to stay in, and closer than RC to Mt Rushmore. It is a bit touristy, but let's face it, the entire area is touristy. No shortage of things to do there. Casinos, restaurants, ars, theater plays, drinking in the bar where Wild Bill Hickock was killed, etc...

I'm taking an extra day at the end of my business trip next week to head to Devils Tower, Deadwood, and Mount Rushmore.

Looking forward to my first visit to these landmarks.

Badlands National Park is a must - Loop Road is an easy 30 mile drive through park with plenty of pullovers and lookouts. If you like to hike, try the Notch Trail, it has a steep ladder and ends with an awesome overlook.

Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Highway are awesome drives, one gives you a tunnel view with Mount Rushmore in the distance.

Hike Blake Elk peak early morning, long hike but well worth the views. Bring a lunch to eat at the top!

After your hike, jump into Sylvan Lake, you will definitely cool off!

Custer State Park has an abundance of prairie land wildlife - drive slow and look near and far.

Rent a UTV in Custer, they are street legal and include GPS maps of 100's of miles of trails (some are pretty technical). We did the 4 hour rental, wish we made it a full day. When you finish, walk across the street and grab a burger at The Custer Wolf Restaurant.
