The wife has always wanted to go to Montana so I though about going this year. Outside of Billings I know nothing. Where is a good area to stay in the spring or fall?

Glacier is must see. Yellowstone also if you have never been. I love just driving through the state. the area between Helena and Glacier is some beautiful high plains, with mountains in the distance.

Miles City, Livingston, Missoula, Whitefish, and dozens of other small towns are great to go through. Most every old town has a bar over 100 years old, always fun to stop for a beer.

Early fall in Glacier is good. Middle of September there will be no crowds but it may be snowing by then. The going to the sun road doesn't open until mid July some years. Closer to July 4th is normal I believe.

If you go to livingston, head on over to Gardiner. About 80 miles from Bozeman. My aunt owns the Best Western up there. Id recommend it, or the bridger cabins. I lived up there for around six months. Beautiful town right on the Yellowstone river. North gate of yellowstone is about 2 miles from the Best Western. Antlers is a good restaurant, as is the K-Bar (be warned - owned by Bama fans). Great white water rafting (more like a fast float) and fly fishing. I would move there tomorrow if I could find a job.

Bozeman is also spectacular. That's where I'd fly into if I was you.

Whitefish is awesome. Stay at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Easy walk into downtown. Lots of shops, bars and restaurants and still has old west feel.

The ski resort is just up the road from resort and Glacier National Park is an easy drive.

One of my wife's favorite places we've been.

Come here to Whitefish. You won't regret it.

If you're a history buff, go see Little Bighorn.

Going to the Sun road is actually open year round to Lake McDonald Lodge. On the east side, the road practically closes about a mile or two in, at St Mary Lake.

I'm taking open all the way. Up and over Logan Pass.

We have a snow bus that takes you from south of town, here in Whitefish, up to the village on Big Mountain. I take it daily to work and it's awesome. It picks me up about a block from where I live near downtown and it takes less than 30 minutes to get to where I gotta be.

Correct. Hopefully this summer will be less crowded. Last summer the park got something like 2 million visitors. The centennial had a lot to do with it so I'm hopeful for a more enjoyable season.

My recommendation is to focus on Montana in the fall. "Spring" here is just an extension of winter and will last all the way in to June.

Fall in Montana is spectacular and it is a great time to visit the parks because the crowds are so much smaller. I have lived in Bozeman, near Yellowstone for 12 years. It's a great base for a Yellowstone trip. It's a college town with lots of activity and unlimited access to hiking and fishing.

Yellowstone and Glacier are very different. If you have time to see both parks in one trip, it would be a very cool contrast and you would get to traverse most of the state. Bozeman to Whitefish is about a 5 hour drive and it is beautiful.

Absolutely true. I wouldn't recommend coming here during mud season (spring and early summer).

Where in Montana are you?

Beartooth Highway is a MUST SEE for anyone visiting Montana in the summer. It's on my bucket list this year when I revisit Yellowstone.

I'm in Bozeman.

Agree that Beartooth is a must. I've driven it Memorial Day weekend when the walls of snow were 12 feet high on either side of where the plow came through, and in the fall when they were about to close it. It's so cool.

I've never skied Whitefish. A group of friends an family are going there this January. I will be in New Orleans and am really bummed to miss it. We ski Big Sky.

I hear that's a cool town; never been. I worked in Yellowstone for a month last summer and the furthest north I got was Gardiner

I will be back, and Bozeman is on the list.

Whitefish is a great place to ski. Very underrated, and off the beaten path kinda compared to the CO or UT resorts. I guess the lack of a large airport is what keeps it more local, which I enjoy. There's also Blacktail down in Lakeside that is even more local, but smaller.

I'm enjoying it but am ready for something else after the summer. I am looking at a few other places to call my next home.

I lived in South Dakota before I was married and made a few trips to Montana and Wyoming. In the past 2 summers we have made two more trips to glacier, Yellowstone areas. Even some FlyFishing. My goal is with Montana/Colorado upon retirement
This past summer I helped my son move from Ak to New Mexico- that was a hell of a road trip.

You should move. We left Baton Rouge 12 years ago and have never regretted it. I work remotely, which you pretty much have to do if you want to make any money. That's the drawback
