Got a job opportunity in Mobile. Is the area decent for families?

Mobile...no. Try Daphne it’s really not bad.

Friend,

Mobile is the worst place I have ever visited. Elberta is lovely, but Fairhope and Daphne are highly overrated with the most unwarranted positively reviewed restaurants of which I know. Dragon Fly is the only place I would recommend. The Grand Hotel is likewise highly regarded for no good reason in the present. I would turn down that offer tonight.

Everyone is moving out of Mobile to Baldwin County. You can’t go wrong with Spanish Fort, Daphne, or Fairhope. All three are a short drive on I-10 or causeway to Mobile.

Mobile traffic isn’t bad at all either.

Midtown is good for families, but you’ll want to do private schools if you are in Mobile proper. Eastern Shore (Daphne, Fairhope, Spanish Fort) has good schools and is great for families though. It’s growing fast and is the place to be right now.

Daphne isn’t bad. Bomhauer’s (sp?) is a good restaurant. Try the black and white chicken.

My wife is looking at homes in Midtown and is looking at UMS Wright as a schooling option. We are coming from Houston and Baldwin county seems a touch to suburban. Not a fan of the large master planned communities.

Mobile has a reputation of being a very cliqueish town, and it's hard for newcomers to penetrate a social scene. I've never lived there so can't attest to it, but I have known several people from Mobile over the years and they do tend to stick together, and most have a strong desire to move back to Mobile. Just more a head's up.

I really like the Midtown and Spring Hill areas of Mobile. Have a friend that lives in the Spring Hill area. Very easy access to downtown from there.

Perfect plan. Midtown is a good area with some charm and good neighborhood type restaurants. You’ll like it there.

I’ve always heard this, and you’re correct that it has that reputation, but in my 15+ years here I’ve never found that to be the case at all. It’s a great place to live.

Friend,

I would somewhat agree about Mobile. Your thoughts on Fairhope and Daphne being overrated are clearly wrong. Fairhope is a hidden gem to which I will retire to one day. The Grand Hotel isn't quite the same since the renovations, but for a relaxing family atmosphere away from the crowded condos and beaches, it is perfection.

Hope you don’t mind the rain. Mobile is regarded as one of the wettest places in America.

I think the secret on Fairhope has been out at least a decade now.
