Drive along Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Portage. Get the Guide Along app and buy the Lake Superior North Shore Hwy 61 route.
After we did that we drove across MN and ND to Dickinson, ND to go to Theodore Roosevelt Nat. Park. That’s an unsual NP in that it has a south and a north unit that are about an hour apart - and they are in two different time zones. The south entrance is in Medora and I think there is a lot going on there in the summer. We were there in late Oct and the town had pretty much closed for the season.
From there you can go to Rapid City, SD. There is a lot to do around RC.

I love Minneapolis during the summer months - one of the better cities out there. Brewery, cocktail bar, and restaurant scene is fantastic. Endless recreational opportunities with the Greenway, lakes, and trails. Target Field is in a great setting, as well, because North Loop is loaded with bars and breweries.
I don't have much in the way of northern Minnesota or North and South Dakota, but you'll probably get some good answers from others.

This.
Depending on where you drive in from, I would say drive North from Duluth to Grand Marais, then drive up the Gunflint Trail and stay at a lodge in the Boundary Waters.
The drive along the Mississippi River from LaCrosse to Red Wing is scenic as well.
Besides that, southern Minnesota is practically just Iowa. You’re not missing much.

Definitely stop at the visitor center there and get the free T-shirt if North Dakota ends up being your last state!
Thats the plan. 48th state on my 48th birthday.

May want to plan a trip to Hawaii and Alaska, or lie. Looks like you have to visit all 50 states to join the club.

To be fair, this sounds way better than Fargo and a free t-shirt on your 50th.

Custer State Park is a must see, rivals some of the national parks
Badlands
Wall Drug is a corny roadside stop you should visit at least once if you're driving by

One of the best walleye lakes in the US is Devil's Lake in North Dakota. If you book a guide, it would be worth it. The best tasting freshwater fish around.
