Found good flight to Boston and plan on renting a car and then have 6 or 7 nights to tour Vermont and Maine in mid July.

Any tips , must see's or suggested itinerary would be greatly appreciated as as always. fwiw - These 2 states are on the my remaining 13 states to visit in the great ole USA.

The OT Trip board is the best.

I've been to both multiple times - maybe can fill in some ideas as you get the ball rolling.

What do you want to do? Who's traveling with you?

And, a note about Maine: It's a lot like Virginia - WAY bigger than you think it is, and takes some time to drive across the non-coastal parts.

My daugher and me only this time. Our primary goal is Acadia NP but since we will be up there want to explore the countryside on the way to Burlington, Stowe, Bar Harbor and/or Portland etc...

Don't mine driving alot
We can do short but moderate/difficult hikes
We like great food at high end restaurants at night

Ideally would be a AirBnb/BRBO for 3 nights in each state. Was looking at Burlington (2-4 nights) and Bar Harbor (2-4 nights) but again I dont know too much about these states and thus seek advice here..

Portland is a great city to walk around - good bars/restaurants along Fore and Wharf, restaurants along the piers/wharfs off Commercial, and several breweries with patio seating. Aside from Portland, would definitely recommend Bar Harbor and Acadia. Obviously, very popular time to visit that part of Maine - not sure of hotel availability right now. Coincidentally, I'll also be in Portland mid-July - my mom lives in Boston, so wife and I are going with to Portland for a day trip to hit some breweries and grab some lunch.

I grew up in Vermont, so a bit more-seasoned there. If you're into hiking, I always recommend Camels Hump. It's an intermediate hike, but we brought our dogs up multiple times. Mount Philo is a quicker hike that gives you some incredible views of Lake Champlain and The Adirondacks. Alternatively, you can drive to the summit via an access road. If you do Mount Philo, make sure to stop at Shelburne Farms - beautiful property w/ restaurant. Neither hike is very far from Burlington.

The more popular VT recommendations on this board is Stowe / Waterbury. Both have some really nice restaurants, but I'd also offer up Stone's Throw in Richmond on your way to/from Burlington. Speaking of Burlington, it's a very pretty small city and I'd encourage you to walk University of Vermont's campus and Waterfront Park. Church Street is a cobblestone, pedestrian-only street lined with bars and restaurants. It's gotten progressively weirder over the years, but a good night out nonetheless.

I'd probably add Woodstock to your itinerary, especially if you're driving from something like Portland to Burlington. Woodstock is a fantastic small town - a lot of cool shops, cafes and restaurants. Vermont is known for covered bridges and Woodstock has quite a few along the Ottauquechee.

One of my favorite places to eat in Maine is Sweet Pea's, right outside of Acadia.

I enjoyed Calvin Coolidge’s birthplace.

No phone service.

I stayed in a town called Woodstock.
It was low key.

I've never been to VT or Acadia, so what I'm going to say may not help a whole bunch, but we did do a Boston to Camden, ME trip last October.

We stayed in Pourtsmouth one night, neat Downtown and glad we stopped. Spent a couple of hours at the Strawberry Banke museum - it was pretty neat, I got a little bored, but my wife really enjoyed walking through the houses.

From Portsmouth we drove onto Portland and stopped at a few places along the way including the Nuble Lighthouse (well worth it) and Ogunquit - wife really enjoyed the shopping here, my daughter and I walked the Marginal Way to Perkins Cove while she shopped and had a great time walking along the coast and hanging out at the harbor at the end.

My wife and I preferred the smaller towns so I'm probably in the minority when I say I wish we'd have just stayed a single night in Portland (or not at all and just visited for a day) instead of 2 - Fort Williams State Park was really neat to explore, we actually went there during the day and I woke up early the next morning and went back out to catch the sunrise over the Portland Head Light. Anyway, we enjoyed exploring the Old Port area of Portland - caught a good sunset along the hills of the East Promenade.

For the afternoon of our second day we ended up back tracking to Kennebunkport and I'm glad we did - had a really good time exploring there downtown and even stopped by to check on the Bush's place.

From Portland we drove to Camden and stayed for 2 nights and this was my favorite part of the trip. Did a tour on a lobster boat that I thought would be cheesy, but we really enjoyed it. The views from atop Mt. Battie in the Camden Hill State Park was worth the drive up (I actually got up early the next morning to catch a sunrise atop Battie - had to walk up because they don't open the gates until sunrise - well worth it).

We also stopped in Freeport on our way back to Boston - if you're not interested in shopping I would skip, but they had some good stores and the L.L. Bean outlet was neat.

Hated we didn't make Acadia on this trip (would have been to rushed), but we REALLY enjoyed our trip along the ME coast.

We did a similar trip in 2018; picked up friends at the Portland airport and drove up to Bar Harbor. It was our first trip there.
Travel Board Maine Trip Report This is a link to the 2018 trip report.

If you are not doing a lot of hiking then 2 nights in BH are probably enough if you do not get there too late in the day.
I would definitely take Hwy 1 either going there or on the way back; much more scenic than the interstate, IMO.
Must do's at Acadia:
- Eat at Jordan Pond and get the popovers
- See sunrise at Cadillac Mountain
- drive the park loop road; part of it is one way and part traffic in both directions.

Other things we did; wouldn't say there are must do's
- Horse drawn wagon ride on the Carriage Road; no motorized vehicles allowed. We did the 1 hour one which was plenty
- Sailboat ride, Windjammer I think. It was about 2 hours IIRC. There are other excursion to see whales, etc.
- Drove to Schoodic Point

We also stayed one night in Camden and one in Portland. On the drive home we stayed one night in North Conway, NH. Mt. Washington is not far from there and you can drive up it or take a cog railway. The Kancamagus Hwy (Hwy 112) goes from Conway to Lincoln. It's a well know road for views especially in the fall. Just north of Lincoln is Franconia Notch State Park.

We've been in southern Vermont and western Mass (the Berkshires) and there is a lot to do there but I don't think you have time for that. Have not been in northern Vermont.

I would spend at least two days in Boston.

are you a beer guy? If so, see below. If not, it is still a pretty good itinerary. The Scenic 100 Byway drive in Vermont was great. I did it twice. Also the drive on the Kancamagus hwy through NH was pretty special. You could drive up to the top of Mt Washington. Bridgton, ME is a quaint little country town. I loved spending a night there. It's sort of on the loop from NH, to ME, to MA.

No Beer runs because my liver gave out due to LSU sports under the Miles era, but I do appreciate the scenic byways trips because we like to view beauty on the way to some where. Car time doesn't faze us on a trip like this. Thanks!!

Yep. May bringing a friend of my daughter who has not been to Boston. (we have been) Therefore, we may drop Vermont in order to do the Freedom Trail and a Red Sox Game and also Acadia NP. Hard not to show someone Boston for the first time as there is just so much there.

no problem! I did a similar trip a couple years ago that did not involve beer. When I get to work I'll update with that itinerary.

From the other thread. I settled on this as both Maine and Vermont in a week was too much driving and not enough hiking!!

quote:

I'm flying into Boston this Monday, renting a car and going to Portland for 2 nights (staying AirBnb on the East End), then to Southwest Harbor (Acadia NP) for 3 nights and then back to Boston (NorthEnd)for 2 nights.

I've been to Boston before so the coast of Maine and the ANP is the primary purpose of this trip. I let you know what I find out!!

Also any recommendation for fine dining on the Northend of Boston would be appreciated.

Made it to Maine via Boston Thoughts so far:

1) Portland Maine a very cool little city with a great history and very nice restaurant and bar scene on the East End where we stayed for 2 nights

2) Freeport Maine is a shopping Mecca and had to eat outta there asap!!

3)And after our first hike in Acadia NP on the Southwest Harbor side I can say this place is very beautiful too. More to follow once I get adjusted to being in the wilds of coastal Maine and get to the Bar Harbor side tomorrow.
