Possibly planning a trip for later next year, heard it’s smart to rent a boat for the duration of trip. Any knowledge of that or certain places to stay?

Don’t know the number of people yet, could be a large group of might end up being only the wife and I.

Some may disagree, but the best way to see the BVIs (if you have boating experience) is to charter a boat and sail from island to island. If you don’t have boating experience can have a similar experience if you charter a boat with a captain.

Jost is a cool island. Is it cooler than any of the others? Probably not. But it’s a great island. Foxy’s gets the press but Soggy Dollar Bar is one of my favorite bars in the world.

Soggy Dollar was my favorite bar in the BVIs, that and the Willie T.

A boat is by far the way to go. Exploring and seeing the places where tourist don't usually go or see makes a boat definitely worth it.

Agree with all above.

Would also add that personalities of hired captains are highly variable, and you will be in close quarters with everyone on the boat. If you have a friend that knows how to sail, it might be better to bareboat with friend as captain.

In early stages of planning a trip back next summer. Spent a summer in college working down there at a sailing camp. Was so stupid back then to leave and go back to college in the fall.

Definitely charter if you can. Doesn't get any better than mooring off a beach not accessible by car.

We had a captain but some of our crew were fully capable of sailing so they did and the captain served more as first mate & tour director. He knew the bartenders at every place we went. It's always good to have that guy with you. At some of the bars we just poured our own and kept a running tab, paid up when we left for the next stop.

Cow Wreck Beach Bar was fun, too.

Annie is a great person.

If you do go to the dock at Anegada be sure to get breakfast at Pam's. Great food and the baked goods there are very tempting.

Big Bamboo is a good spot to get Anegada lobster. Just understand that in the Caribbean there is a specific lobster season. You can't get them every day like at your local grocery store.

It depends what you want out of your trip. You can get a room on the island pretty cheap ($150-250 a night) if you didn’t want to stay on a boat. We stay on island and take a boat out for day trips part of our stay. Charters are getting expensive with gas prices going up though. I’d rather stay on island and walk to Soggy Dollar and the surrounding bars and know I can just walk back to my room at night.

Agree on day trip pricing. If we do a Jost to Anegada day we are looking at around $2000.

Depending on the time of year too you could run into weather issues staying on a boat vs staying on island.

True. We've sailed at the end of June with beautiful weather. The pricing is definitely adjusted for low (hurricane) season.

Go to Gertrude’s. They let you pour your own drink.

I've been to Gertrude's (and One Love) many times in the past.

Sitting here now and people are complaining about prices going up. Probably going to affect the price of everything here soon.
