Headed to Rio Bueno Jamaica. It's on the north coast about halfway between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. I'll probably be there for a few days meeting my client and getting a feel for the area. Then I want to bring my kids back later in the summer once I've found a good safe villa with some good activities.

Any recommendations or experiences appreciated.

Why? My product is scheduled to arrive at the port the last week of May. The customer wants me there when they receive the product so they can discuss quality issues and make a decision about placing a much larger, multi year, ongoing order.

If it is legal to fly to Jamaica at that time, then I will be there.

In the OP you said....

It sounded like leisure so my recommendation as you asked for, was to postpone, not cancel. Then you replied with:
quote:

My product is scheduled to arrive at the port the last week of May. The customer wants me there when they receive the product

....which is much more resolute than the OP. In that case have fun.

Been there once.

Was offered a job there.

Will never EVER go back there.

It is solidly in the Third World.

Good luck?

(PS: I’d never consider bringing my kids there. I love mine.)

No seriously I understand that sometimes it's hard to travel to a resort area for business. Because everythinbg is geared towards tourists. So I am looking for any potential inside info from someone who has spent some serious time there.

I've never been to Jamaica, but since this board is kinda slow, I'll comment that the general feeling from this board and elsewhere towards Jamaica is the Resorts are fine but DON'T leave the resorts.

Is your client that lives there a possibility to ask?

May? I expect by then they won't be accepting travelers from the US. May is supposed to be our peak (yes I know everyone is predicting different things), but it is very likely going to be in May. I would at least look to see what options you have if this happens.

Also, expect your contact to want half your goods in order for it to be approved to leave the port.

I disagree with this. There are a few sides to Jamaica, and it's a pretty interesting country.

In resort areas (Negril, Mo Bay, etc..) the advice to not leave your resort is somewhat founded. The entire economy in those areas is built around a parasitic relationship with tourists, so you get just bombarded with people trying to sell you shite. Resorts keep the vendors at bay and create a relaxing atmosphere (the vending can get chaotic and stressful at times).

Once you get off the beaten path in Jamaica, the locals don't depend on tourists for their income, so you don't have to deal with the hagglers nearly that much. The Jamaican people are generally super chill, healthy, friendly, and live a subsistence lifestyle.

Then you have Kingston. Just stay away.

tldr: If you're going to be at heavy tourist areas, having a way to insulate yourself from the vendors is nice. If you're out in the countryside, people are cool.

I did and would recommend staying at an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. Riding from the airport in Montego Bay to Negril (90 min) was quite the eye-opener.

In other words, vendors have petty souvenirs to sell, but the hope is someone will buy drugs.

Not by a long shot. El Salvador, the slums of Rio, Venezuela, much of Mexico, Honduras....
And If y’all think Jamaica is terrible, then definitely don’t go to Haiti.

I’ve been to Jamaica 13 times and I’ve never stayed at an AI or anything resembling a resort. I wouldn’t say I’ve been all over the island but I’ve been to more places, including Kingston, than probably 99% of the people who go there have. Now I’m not going to go wandering around in Trench Town alone at night. Just like I wouldn’t go wandering around the Fuller Park area if I was in Chicago. So depending where you are yeah you’ll be pestered to buy shite. But the chances of being a victim of random violence are pretty low. Use common sense just like you would wherever you’re traveling and you’ll be fine.

I can vouch for you. I’d give my coolers a 10/10. Holds ice longer than my Yeti and Rtic.

Be aware that the virus is about 4-5 weeks late in reaching Latin America and such. Cuba is in about its 2-3 week.
