As an aside, we'll need a car for our Tuscany trip. Planning to fly in/out of Rome. I typically use Hertz/National in the state but Sixt shows up a bunch overseas. Any opinions on the best company to use.

I feared my life riding in taxi from Naples train station to ferry to capri. Naples reminds me of what Mogadishu seems like

We used Sixt and they were great. Get the “throw the keys at them at turn in” insurance. It’s not expensive and if anything happens you turn in the keys and walk away. I had it and backed into a 1000 year old wall. They checked my paperwork when I turned it in and that was it.
Driving in the Tuscan countryside is easy. Just respect the bicyclists as there are many but everyone obeys the rules there. I personally would not drive in Rome.

Yep. Scariest taxi ride of my life was in Naples. Careening around every corner.
Taxis. Be sure to only get a cab at an official taxi stand. Rome and Naples are littered with gypsy cab drivers. You’ll know who they are as they approach you coming out of the stations. The official drivers do not do that. They wait at the taxi stands.

We would be picking up at the airport and heading straight to Tuscany. Same on the return. I can see Rome another trip.
Appreciate the tip on the insurance

Also following. I’ll there early June. Day and a half in Naples (will do Pompeii while there), 5 nights in Positano, and 2 nights in Ravello.

Interesting to see your take on the 2. We contemplated staying in Positano but ended up staying in ravello the whole time (3 days). Once we visited Positano we realized it was the correct decision. We like a more chill and secluded vibe vacation.

5 nights in Positano and 2 nights in Ravello would be perfect. As I stated above, Positano is my favorite and we did Ravello as a day trip (which was easy), but I don't consider Ravello a good base because it is an ordeal going down the mountain every time you want to go somewhere else. But it would be a wonderful place to be for 2 days.

Also the La sponda restaurant didn’t appear to be taking any online reservations for 2023 yet, I just emailed them to see if this is something they open up later in the season.

In late June/early July, the majority of the Versace store (not an outlet) in Naples is half off.
This is after the import tariff of Versace
Is removed + you get your sales tax back at the airport.
It might not be for everyone. However, instead of buying someone a $90 souvenir somewhere else in Italy - you can get them something fun from Versace that has a perceived retail value of $600 stateside.
Nice if you need to get a lady a bag or Dad a fun colorful shirt.

Woah, is this only in Naples?

It was not available in Rome two days later when we decided that we wanted to grab a few more things.
And when we asked they said that it was exclusive to Naples and the Venice locations + that people travel from all over the world for opening week of the annual sale.

Also, and no one probably cares, the Gucci store in the Rome Airport has the best deals in the world.
It will still seem way overpriced for most but if you need that Christmas gift, etc.
Build in extra time to get to the airport to shop there.

Hey I see you are going to Tuscany later this year. We went to Tuscany/Umbria for a 10 year anniversary trip this past October. Cortona, Todi, and Pitigliano were our favorite stops. Todi was our favorite out of those three. Very authentic town (just a few tourists) with amazing vistas on every side of town pretty much. Cortona is great as well but lots of American tourists are there,

Not a typical suggestion, but if you can manage to squeeze it in, I highly recommend it.
Drive, taxi, or take the Sita bus to Praiano and hike the Sentiero degli Dei back to Positano.
It will transform your trip to the Amalfi Coast from a fun experience into a lifetime memory, I promise you.

Thanks for the feedback! I need to get serious about our plans in the next couple of weeks. Though I'm planning to spend a few days just relaxing at the villa we rented.
Will be the first trip in a long time where we weren't moving around constantly.
