Have a chance to go on a trip to Manila in the Phillipines. The Phillipines look nice but I'm not much of a big city type. Is this worth the cost and effort of a flight? Looks like it's 15 hours from LAX. I live in the mountains and love it, enjoy the beach, all my previous international trips have been to South/Central America and I've really enjoyed the cultural immersion.

I did not enjoy my trip to NYC if it's comparable to that.

So, it's been decades since I've been, but Manila, no. But you can visit waterfalls, etc., outside of Manila. The Philippines is not a place I'd choose to travel to on its own. Two days when you were in Japan anyway? Sure.

I don't think it is very common for tourists to visit Manilla. Lots of crime, poverty and allegedly some of the worst traffic in the world.

You could fly into Manilla and then catch a connecting flight to one of the nicer beach islands if you wanted to do a cheap Asian beach vacation, but I wouldn't go to just Manilla.

No... Its a shithole.

Now jump to one of the gorgeous islands within a 45m flight from there and worth a stay in Manila for a day.

Their domestic airport is by far the worst I've ever flown through.

I go to the Phillippines every so often as my Mom's side of family is there and Manila has some stuff to see but definitely go to the other islands for more of the scenery.

Absolutely. It’s cheap AF, great food… venture off to a small beach village for an over water bungalow for $25 night

Mount pinatabou is cool as shite. Not sure if it is still a ridiculous hike to get there but it was definitely the most treacherous thing i have ever done after a night of partying in manila. I dont know how i made it haha

I know what it used to look like, but it erupted when we were in Japan, so not sure what the state of it is now

It looked like this when i went.
I remember once i got to the area where the tour started having to ride a jeep or something a pretty good ways. Then we had to hike along where the lava flowed uot for a long ways. Then got to a point where we had to start hiking up the mountain. I want to say it was like a 7 kilometer or so hike each way.

Totally cool.

OP, if you're going to go, do not drink directly from bottles (of Coke, etc.) Use only straws that were fully wrapped when given to you.

The culture seems to be to urinate on stock that is stacked out back, which is why you need the clean straw.

Now that I'm thinking about it, Manila, depending on your tolerance for flights and screw ups, may be worth it for a few reasons. Jeepneys are kind of unique and weird. Coconut Pie probably won't kill you. A whore will try to pick up your pre-teen son, especially right out of the base gate (Subic). But, you can likely get almost the entire experience flying into Manila, and immediately getting the hell out of it. Waterfalls and lakes like diat posted.

IMO, no. If you enjoy the beach I would suggest Cebu (Lapu Lapu) and consider flying to Boracay, ferry to Bantayan, Oslob to swim with the whale sharks, Bohol for more jungle type stuff.

The Boracay Sunset might be the prettiest I have ever seen
