Is a 1 night detour through Chattanooga worth it?

Going to Asheville area in May and planning the route. Will probably stop for the night in Atlanta, but thinking about possibly taking a detour through Chattanooga if it's worth it.
And by worth I mean scenery, will Chattanooga offer something unique for a 1 night stay, etc?
Google maps says it really only adds an extra hour to our trip, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Would just rather do something other than stay at some interstate exit hotel if we traveled through Atlanta.

Chattanooga has plenty for a one night stay, not as much as Atlanta though.
Lookout Mountain has some cool places to stay on it. Dwell downtown is a great hipster hotel too. Some good places to drink and eat.
If you do stay here, there is a fun drive to Asheville if you skip the interstate through Knoxville and go through the Ocoees and pass through the Nantahala area. Will add a bit of time, but great scenery and fun places to stop.
What would you want to do here? Historical battlefieds, hiking, tourist traps like ruby falls/rock city (both are fun), or just checking out foodie/drinking places?
Aquarium is nice, walking across the walking bridge to the northshore is neat.

We will have our daughter with us and we would probably get there mid afternoon, so really just would like to stay somewhere that we could walk around and explore for a bit. Interesting shops, maybe a park, etc.
Is downtown Chattanooga walkable?
Would definitely be interested in doing this

Around the aquarium/art district and the northshore are fun to walk around. There is a bridge between the two that is only for walking. It's a really cool old bridge and there are two really good ice cream places on both sides. North shore has a few hipster shops to check out and decent food on both sides. Northshore also has a really nice park that you walk over on the walking bridge. Any of the hotels by the aquarium would work for this.
Main street also has some decent places to check out. I don't advise walking between main street and the riverfront though. There are free trams to get between the two though. Choo Choo is over by main street area, kiddo would like toe check out the trains there most likely. It's a neat place.
Aquarium would be fun for the kiddo, we also have the Creative Discovery Museum which is similar to the Children's Museum in NOLA.
Here's the route via 74. Looks like the time difference is 20 mins. There are a lot of branch's off this you could take to see different places.
On this route, Sylva is a neat town. Ocoee Olympic Center is a decent stop to check out where they did the whitewater events for the 96 Olympics. You could easily add Cherokee if you wanted to see the reservation.
If you stayed on 64, this would add a lot more time, but you get to check out the road between Franklin and Highlands which is gorgeous. Highlands and Brevard are neat little towns too.

Where are you coming from? The drive from Chattanooga to Asheville along old US64 is much nicer than any route through Atlanta regardless. Plus trying to get through Atlanta just plain suck period.

And if you do decide to head down to the Southside from the aquarium area (like 15 blocks) there are free buses that will take you there.

You also have Rock City / Ruby Falls to check out in Chattanooga, I am sure your daughter would enjoy it.

Lupi's Pizza.
It's basically Mellow Mushroom, I don't know why people get so hung up on it. We have better options.

I don't know about Mellow Mushroom, never been there. But anytime we go to Chattanooga we go by there. What are some other options for future visits?

It's a very similar chain, it's very decent pizza too. It is a lot better than the big delivery places.
Tremont Tavern, Terminal, Feed, Champy's is great for some greasy fried chicken, Tony's Pasta, Embargo 62 is a new one that's pretty good.
Some people really like Two Ten Jack and Tupelo Honey, not my cup of tea, but they are popular.

Two ten jack (good ramen house, ignore what DamGuide says )
Clyde's
Tremont Tavern
Il Primo (better than Tony's for italian)
Chatterbox BBQ (grab and go. It's not a nice place to sit and eat)
1885
And I like lupis too fwiw. I'd just rather get better food than 2 pizzas and 2 beers for $50.
Southside pizza is a new pace that has good NY style pizza.

I'm still bitter about that $20 ramen bowl. It was decent though, just not $20 decent.

Haven't tried it yet, good to hear it's decent. Will have to go.

If you end up doing the night in Atlanta I would drive the following route the next morning as it's a much nicer drive than the all interstate route. Take I85>I985>US23>US74>I40.
I've never stayed overnight in Chattanooga, but I have driven through plenty of times and the scenery is pretty nice, especially if you're used to Louisiana.

Lookout Mountain/Rock City is pretty cool if you've never done it for sure. Great for kids as well. Ruby Falls is cool too but I like Lookout Mountain more. You can do one in morning and another after lunch.

We got fed Lupi's lasagna for a lunch and learn today. So much better than freakin Jimmy Johns and Papa Johns.
