My wife is planning our first Disney Trip for April, my daughter will have just turned 5.

She is pricing it at as a 4-day trip, but I think 3 days would be enough for daughter.

If we go 3 days in the parks with a travel day on each end, so 4 nights, is that too quick? I'm open to either, I just don't want to spend the extra money if my child will be burned out by day 2.

Thoughts?

Disney no longer offers neverending passes. We bought some 10-day ones 10 years ago and use them 2 days at a time. Roll in late night, early morning. Sleep in and go to Downtown Disney and shop and eat a nice meal the first day. Then we go nonstop from open to close for 2 days staying on property in the cheap resorts. Then we head home. We get to see everything (park hopper), don't need to spend much on a room because we are never there and burn them out for Disney for a couple of years and I don't have to waste time off of work for a vacation I don't really enjoy.

So I would say 2 days is enough.

That's a good first trip. It will depend if your kid likes the rides or not. Mine wasn't very big on it, so that limits what they can do.

We did 4 park days with our 4 year old last year. It was enough. Does your kid still take naps? Some parks are going to be boring while you could spend all day in MK and AK.

My folks came with us, so they went nap with my daughter which was awesome. Also, they don't like the big rides, so we could ride while they checked out something for the littler kids like character meets.

Just depends on your kid and how much you think she can handle. We did a whole week(5 days of park passes) when my daughter was 4 and she did fine. She's a late sleeper though and we never got to the parks as soon as they opened. She was also cool napping in the stroller while the wife, our son and I did our thing.

You can see a lot in 3 days, but we really enjoyed the somewhat lazy approach we took and would definitely do that again. We never felt rushed, and didn't feel like we missed anything we wanted to except the Lion King show at Animal Kingdom. I'd have blown my brains out had we been on a tight schedule to see everything.

We are doing 6 nights in November with a 5 year old and 1 year old (5.5 days in the parks). I would say with older kids you could pull off 3 park days but with a 5 yr old you will move slow (stopping for bathroom, tantrums, early nights, etc.).

But I agree for the the first trip you can go 2-3 days and just hit the highlights to see if your child likes it and then plan a bigger trip the next year.

Thanks for the input everyone. The wife is trying to sell me on 4 days saying "we are there, might as well do the whole thing". My thought is, it's not a flight - so travel costs aren't a huge concern, there really is no economy of scale for staying an extra day now.

When we went, adding another day only added about $100 to the total cost, including the room and park tickets. It was almost a no-brainer for us, especially since we didn't do the Park Hopper.

Not sure how they price things now though. This was 7 years ago. I will say though, that you will probably need 2 days in MK with a 5 year old, at the least.

My wife's plan is 2 days in MK, and 1/2 day in Epcot and 1/2 in HS.

What would we add with another day?

We all absolutely loved AK. It was probably my favorite park, and can easily be done in 1 day. HS was pretty disappointing, but I know they're working on some expansions there, or may already be done. We did do a whole day there since we didn't have Park Hopper. I think my son and I rode Tower of Terror 7 or 8 times. 1/2 day in Epcot is fine. That's what we did, then just relaxed at the hotel pool the rest of the day.

Animal Kingdom is awesome imo.

Also, I personally wouldn't advise park hopper with a 5 year old. Get to the park and stay there the whole day. If you have the time to do it, give yourself a full day at each park and an extra day at Magic Kingdom. MK will easily be your child's favorite. Schedule a "break day" in there if you can as well.

Another piece of advice, bring or rent a stroller...even for a 5 year old. The kid will appreciate the break from walking and you will probably wish you could get in the stroller as well by the end of the trip.

I usually have done 4 days. 2 in MK, 1 in AK and 1 at either epcot or HS. with younger kids i usually skip epcot. I don't do park hoppers, saving money that way.

To do Disney right is 5 days with 2 at Magic Kingdom and 1 at the others. If you plan well you can do 4 with a park hopper. I did that recently and it worked great. We skipped Hollywood Studios because Toy Story land was too new and packed and my kids can’t ride much there due to height. Until they add more that park isn’t worth the value but that all changes in 2019 with several new additions.

I’d do MK one day. Epcot one day. Animal Kingdom one day. If you have a 4th day you can do Hollywood. If you have a park hopper you can make Hollywood and Animal Kingdom partial days and be back in Magic Kingdom by 4-5 for another evening there. We do hoppers to go eat at Epcot each night except the days we do Mk which we like Be Our Guest there for dinner.

Your daughter is the perfect age to love the trip. I’d suggest a nice jogging stroller to keep her from being exhausted and to give you a spot to store snacks, change of clothes, drinks, etc. we bring in food and drinks everyday.

Thanks for tips everyone.

My wife is handling most of the planning, but I'm trying to help her out. It sounds like consensus is 4 days (or more), so I think I'm going to give in and do that. Our Disney Agent (does everyone have one?) says that a day park hopper is the same price as 4 day tickets. So, based on everything I've heard it sounds like we should do 2 days at MK (maybe First and last day?) and spend the other 2 days on the other. If we don't do hopper, should we do Epcot and HS and skip AK?

Is it possible to do a park hopper one day, and tickets the other day? I hate to pay for the hopper for 4 days when it sounds like we will certainly be at MK 2 full days.

Right now, she is leaning to staying at Port Orleans, thoughts on that one?

Thanks again guys.

Don't skip Animal Kingdom. Everybody has their own opinion I guess but there's plenty to do and spend a whole day at AK, especially with a 5 year old.

this

not sure why the OP is adamant about skipping AK, but it was easily mine and my daughter's favorite park

Totally agree. As an adult, my favorite park is actually Epcot but Animal Kingdom is a close second and my kids absolutely love it.

Do 4 days and ditch the park hopper. You may end up saving money that way rather than 3 days with a park hopper. Park hopping is exhausting with small kids and you waste a lot of time traveling.

Look and see if Magic Kingdom is doing Early Morning Magic (Sundays and Tuesdays I think) one of your days. It's a separate ticket but it lets you into Fantasyland 1.5 hours before the park opens with only a few other people and you get a breakfast buffet. you can essentially knock out 4 attractions before anyone else gets in.

Not against it at all, that was just down on my wife’s list.

So if we ditch hopper and go 4 days - MK, Epcot HS, and AK? Still do a 2 at MK, what to drop?

If you're intent on dropping a park with a 5 year old, I'd drop Epcot. HS was underwhelming to me, but there's still a decent amount there for a younger one. Epcot is more geared towards teens and adults.
