Going to a wedding on NYD in Gatlinburg, was thinking of flying in and out of Nashville and spending a day in Nashville. Prices look roughly the same to fly in/out of Nashville and rent a car as flying in/out of Knoxville. Also when would be the best time to book flights? Flying out either 12/29 or 12/30 and back the 2nd

Flew into Knoxville and drove to Gatlinburg in March this year.

Drive was very pretty but on winding roads. Took a little over an hour.

Yeah that is an option but looking at Nashville to Gatlinburg mainly.

So it's not a bunch of windy mountain roads?

It’s a pretty damn straight on I-40 until you get about 45 minutes outside of Knoxville, then it gets windy on the interstate, specifically once you get past Crossville and closer to Harriman.

Once you get past Harriman, the rest of the drive into Knoxville is relatively straight in my opinion.

Then you get off the interstate past Knoxville and head toward Gatlinburg. I wouldn’t consider that super winding either though there are definitely turns, and you are gonna be start-stop pretty much from Sevierville anyway.

Pretty safe bet that whatever cabin you are staying at will then require some winding roads to get to once you’re in the area, but how else do you expect to get up into the mountains?

I don't mind driving on the windy roads, I was just talking mainly on the Nashville-Knoxville part. It's just as expensive to fly in/out of Nashville and rent a car as it is to fly in/out of Knoxville and not rent a car for those dates.

Have you looked into flying into Chattanooga? A couple of times, I've found it cheaper than Knoxville. It's a short drive.

Also check prices to Asheville NC. Sometimes they are really good.

Chattanooga to Gatlinburg: interstate is an option, there's also the four lane road to the east that looked so good when it was planned. In fact they put a 45mph speed limit on it and that's a shame.

New Years can be great weather;it can also be icy and snow. I-40 goes over the Cumberland Escarpment which is high and gets snow when Nashville and Knoxville don't. I-40 has stupid wrecks that shouldn't happen. One thing is that nobody seems to see the need to clear the highways. Single car wrecks can close the road for a couple of hours. Don't plan to cut your arrival time close to the beginning of the festivities.

I've looked into flying into there but the point would be to spend a day or day and a half in Nashville, my gf loves Nashville. Don't know if it is worth it though

Not any more windy than the drive from Knoxville Airport.

Could be bad weather. I wouldn't think bad weather is probable. I have been there at New Year's and it was in the 60s.

Bad weather would also effect your drive regardless of the Airport.

Question is, do you want to sit in a car for an extra 2.5 hours.

The answer is that OP doesn't want to sit in that car and make that drive, but gf loves Nashville and thinks it would be a fun addition to the trip.

Suck it up, dude. You're flying to Nashville!

Did it several years ago so don't recall specifics. What I do remember was the drive back to Nashville was not bad at all. The drive in was a bit of a drag with it being a long day. Holiday travel, so got to airport 2 hours early w checked bags, 90 min flight that ran late, issues at car rental place, then the drive. Got into Gatlinburg after 10pm and was exhausted; was also my first time there and in mountains, so that added to stress.

Nashville was cool, only regret was we spent too much time bar hopping and always got late starts the next day site seeing.

I would do it again if wife wanted to do Nashville, but would plan it better to get their earlier in the day as I hate driving into vacation spots late at night

Do not forget Nashville is Central Time and once you pass through Crossville it is Eastern Time Zone. So your drive back to Nashville would take and “extra hour”. Local traffic should be tolerable and the Nashville Airport is on the Eastern side of Nashville so you avoid cluster traffic. Worst part of drive is Harriman area to merging of 40/75 into Knoxville it is malfunction junction. Chattanooga to Knoxville/Sevierville drive is easy on 1-40.
Asheville I-40 to Sevierville is truly winding interstate especially the last 30 miles from NC exit 20 to Newport TN area. It is 55 mph with large trucks req to stay in right lane. Roads are well maintained even with snow but after dark things change when traffic drops and temps drop ice can form easily.

If you have the time and the money is about the same then just fly into Nashville. You will have a good time.
