Going to San Antonio next weekend. Looking for the best places to stay. Does not have to be along the Riverwalk, just where I’ve been told by others to stay. Where are the best places to eat and visit while there?

The Menger across the street from the Riverwalk.

The Emily Morgan or The Menger.

But before you do that, read the history of both hotels.

Plus one. It’s the only one I’ve stayed at. Been twice for business.

Although the Hilton looks pretty incredible.

The Drury Inns on the riverwalk are cool and priced right. The early evening free drinks and appetizers are a good segway to a late dinner. Not local but a great chain.

Riverwalk Plaza. Not exactly on the riverwalk but it’s nearby.

The Emily Morgan next door to the Alamo is supposedly haunted. Nice hotel and I had a few weird experiences with the elevators and noises in the hallway in the middle of the night. Sounded like a gurney rolling past my door but nothing was there.

I like La Mansion del Rio on the River Walk, but the Menger is good too.

The JW Marriott up off 281N is great...especially if you play golf.

Hotel Contessa

It's on a "quiet" part of the Riverwalk but very close/easily walkable to where all the Riverwalk action is. Just a few steps from La Villita, too.

Was staying here when I proposed to my wife.

It has been my experience that the best hotel on the Riverwalk is the Mokara Hotel. It's a smaller property with a boutique feel and a nice spa. If Riverwalk frontage isn't a necessity, Hotel Emma at The Pearl Complex is the best hotel in town.

The Hilton and Hyatt are nice and reasonably priced. Both are at the heart of things and have good bars.

Menger is off the Riverwalk and the bar isn’t great. But it’s worth a visit for the history.

Stayed here once. Riverwalk entrance is across the street the price is very good compared to hotels along the riverwalk. I'd definitely recommend visiting Dirty Nelly's Irish pub. Had to make sure I kept my wife between myself and the river; if not I would have surely fell in after leaving the pub. LOL!

ETA: For breakfast and/or lunch, I highly recommend going to Mi Terra Café y Panaderia. I make it a point to eat here every time we visit San Antonio.
