I think they are all generally the same in the US, but Marriott just has more hotels more places IMO. There are 10X as many marriott properties as Hilton properties for example. almost 6000 to almost 600.

There are actually 7000 Hilton properties around the world.

Marriott is the winner for me for the reasons given.

Now that I am lifetime platinum it tends to be a no brainer. But before that, the combination of redemption value and availability.

I agree hyatt on redemption is better but choices are just so limited due to number of hotels.

My biggest frustration with marriott has again been mentioned - international redemption is rarely worth it. Actually outside business I rarely stay marriott in major european cities - they are overpriced compared to other options.

I do have gold in hilton and use hyatt but marriott is the best IMO domestic.

I can't really compare various programs since I've used Hilton Honors for many years, however I can say I'm extremely pleased with the program and see no reason to go to any other.

Got the Hilton Aspire card about two years ago and have been pleased with the overall experience. Annual fee is hefty, but the bonus points are very good and every Hilton has been extremely generous with early/late checks.

I have IHG status through my United Club card. Don't use it as much, but no issues in the few times I've stayed.

Hyatt has the best points value by a good bit of any of the major chains, but less options outside of big cities. Depends on where you will be visiting regularly.

Bonvoy points are basically worthless

From a loyalty standpoint, Hyatt’s top trier Globalist gives the best perks and takes care of their loyalists the best. They may not have as many hotels as Marriott or Hilton, but their footprint is enough.

On top of that, you can easily get Marriott Platinum with a single Bonvoy Brilliant Amex. Hilton, you can be diamond with just a Hilton Aspire Amex.

I’ve gotten a ton of free stays with Hyatt and I travel only two-three times/yr.

Hyatt also awards you a free night each time you stay at 5 different brands within the portfolio.

Que?? Places like this (Prince De Galle, 1300 Euro a night cash) are where I redeem my points in Europe.

interesting. I was looking at this:

quote:

With more than 584 hotels across six continents, Hilton Hotels & Resorts provides the foundation for exceptional travel experiences and values every guest who walks through its doors.

But then when you go into the site:

quote:

7,295 PROPERTIES WORLDWIDE

I figured 600 was low but just ran the google search

There's something fishy with their property claim. Hilton has 27 hotels in France. Marriott has 69. If you only have 27 hotels in one of the most visited countries in the world, I don't know how you get to 7,200 "properties."

But I would think 600 sounds low for them too

Edit:

LINK

quote:

Marriott is the largest branded hotel in the world with more than 1.5 million rooms, making it 35% bigger than its closest U.S. competitor, Hilton. It has, however, grown its rooms and pipelines more slowly than Hilton for many years, with 3.2% Net Unit Growth (NUG) in 2022 vs Hilton’s 4.5%, as shown in the chart below.

The two weeks I am about to spend in Europe with points disagrees with you.

I have bounced between Hilton Diamond and Marriot Titanium Elite for quite a while now.

Neither really rise above the other. It all depends on the physical hotel you are staying at. I have tended to lean towards Hilton because of their Curio collection, but both are ok.

I think Marriot has a better point value, but Hilton usually has quarterly point bonuses that offset the value of Marriot.

Agreed. I've stayed in named suites in Europe on points, and some bomb arse properties. The Shelbourne in Dublin, Prince de Galles in Paris, some hotel in Limerick I can't remember the name of, the AC Marriott in Wroclaw (which was too beautiful for being in nowheresville, Poland) etc.

Consider consistency. I can count on two hands the number of times moms in the traveling lacrosse group have left the non-Marriott property to find a different hotel in Texas in the last year and a half. I've never had to refuse a room at a Marriott property.

There's a big difference between the smaller number of hotels that have the "Hilton" brand, and the much larger number of hotels that include all of Hilton's brands (Doubletree, Conrad, Waldorf-Astoria, Hampton, etc.).

That situation is the same for Marriott, as there are something like 30 brands under the Marriott umbrella -- one of which is "Marriott."

Marriott is good. Locations everywhere and even their lower tiers like the Fairfield are almost all good.
Still the wrong answer for best.
That would be Hyatt.

Fairfield over Hampton Inn?

I find Hampton to be a viable option in both large and small cities.

Marriott

Among other things, you get the fifth night free when booking 4 with points. Free night certificate with $95 annual fee on credit card pays for itself.
Hilton takes too many points to redeem and Hampton rooms smell bad. Holiday Inn has better point value than Hilton but quality is inconsistent.
