Help Planning RV Trip to Colorado - August

Taking the kids (8 & 7) on an RV trip at the end of summer. Planning to leave Houston and make it to Amarillo on Day 1, then finish the drive on Day 2.
The question is where we should head to on Day 2 for a 3-4 day stay?
Our kids have never been hiking but I think they would enjoy some shorter ones. I'd prefer a spot where we could find somewhere to swim, ride bikes, and just hang out. Wife and I like to eat out so we don't want to be too remote.
Should we bounce around or find one spot and stay?

Thanks for the suggestions.
I wanted to also add that a game at Coors Field would be awesome. I just checked and they will be playing the Padres the days we are looking to be there so I may add in a day trip (pulling a car) up to Coors for a game.

RMNP is worth the time. Drive the Million Dollar Hiway between Silverton and Ouray. It is highway 550 on maps and may be the prettiest road in Colorado.

Or Salida which is about 30 minutes south of BV. Salida is a great, family oriented town with a river flowing through town. There are always a lot of kids tubing and swimming in the river. There is a nice hike about 20 minutes out of town that are pretty flat and easy called Greens Creek Hiking Trail. You do have to drive up a dirt road to the trailhead but you can do it in a car.

It's a bit further west, away from Denver and the Rockies game, and maybe a little more rural than what you are looking for, but you may want to look into Glenwood Springs. The Glenwood canyon area is gorgeous and there is rafting, hiking, fishing, mountain biking and bike trails in and around the area.

Highway 50 across the state is really pretty. Lots of canyons and spots to stop along a river to picnic.

Thanks everyone, this is a great start. Rockies game isn't required but I thought it would be fun. The boys are really into baseball right now and we try to knock out a stadium when we go on a trip if we can.

I'd strongly consider Santa Fe and also looking up state and National Parks.
You have Great Sand Dunes National Park south of Denver which is not well known. A lot of great state parks also.
Some of the RV parks can be fantastic. So don't overlook them. Its not a "trailer park", but many of them are very blue collar middle class with tons of nice people just trying to affordably travel around.
ETA: If you are renting a class C there's a good chance you won't be doing 75-80 on the highway but closer to 65. So strongly consider routes off the interstate just to see the country.

Thanks for this. Not renting, we are taking the in-laws Class A, which we have done before.
I will look into Santa Fe as well.
Thanks!

I'm making a lot of assumptions but reading your posts to me it seems like your best bet is to head to Estes Park/ Rocky Mountain National Park and stay for your 3-4 days. That's the perfect place to have restaurants, hiking, lakes, biking, etc. Its only 45 mins up the mountain from the Denver suburbs.
I also highly recommend Carlsbad Caverns NP in Carlsbad NM but that's out of the way for you from Amarillo to Denver.
If you really want "off the beaten path" you can do the Guadalupe Mountains NP, Carlsbad Caverns NP and then White Sands NP in NM; work your way north to Santa Fe, and then end up in Denver/ CO for the rest of your trip. But that's not a little detour I know. There's really not much between Dallas and Colorado unfortunately.

Thank you!
I want to present a couple options to the wife and this is great. I'll be doing the driving so breaking the trip up is preferred for me, but she wants to get there and start enjoying our time.

Santa Fe with a bigger RV can be a challenge. Watch your mirrors!! There was a church with parking for oversized vehicles within walking distance of the town square and the Loretto chapel. Last year it was $5.00 for all day. Don't remember the street but ask a policeman and they will know. Thats what I did.
