Booked a trip a couple years ago to Hawaii. COVID killed it. Used insurance to rebook it. Going next week. Flying Dallas to Honolulu. Not a great flyer. Have only done 2-4 hour flights. This one will be 9. We are flying premium economy on AA so maybe that will help.

Anyway, has anyone here been to hawaii recently? i know they rolled back all covid protocols last week. Hoping our experience won't be super terrible.

Took the same flight you are abt to, back in February. We always look for seats where we can get out easily and walk around which do like every two hours. Flight was fine. I think all the Hawaii Safe Travels is done, but we precleared in Dallas and it was flawless on arrival anyways. It was a bit annoying with masks on and off going into places but nothing that bad, and I think that may be wrapped too? Anyways, enjoy.

Whatever you do DO NOT expect to sleep on the plane. It was a miserable flight for myself and my wife but Hawaii is so worth it if you have never been. Our last trip there was 5 years ago and we are heading back to Oahu and Maui in less than 2 months. Make sure you try and rent a vehicle and just cruise around the island one of the days you are there. Keep us updated and have fun

We were on Maui last week, the last week of Safe Travels and mask mandates. I thought they would be lax since it was ending, but nope. It was our second trip there during Covid. It seemed really crowded but we don't usually go during spring break.

If you are renting a car, make sure you are signed up for the agency's loyalty program so you can potentially skip the awful lines. I say potentially because last week was first time ever we've had to wait despite being signed up (Budget... usually just grab a contract and go). I'm talking over an hour. This after an hour just sitting on the plane waiting for a gate to open up. Did a quick day trip to Oahu and didn't experience any of that.

Agree with what was said about getting up and walking around. Last time we went I’m almost certain I developed some clots in my calves. Was uncomfortable walking in LAX and painful when we got to Maui. Calves hurt for 2 days before they started feeling better.

Dramamine really works. I slept on my flight back from Hawaii to the mainland a little over a month ago.

I was on Oahu in February for a few days before heading to Big Island. This was pre-rollback, and the only places I remember requiring a vax card were Maui Brewing - Waikiki, Pearl Harbor Memorial, and Iolani Palace. Nowhere else on Oahu requested it and no one on Big Island required it. Things seem like they are getting back to normal there.

For trips to Hawaii, I suggest just sucking up the lost travel time on day 1 and on day 2 you should be good to go.

What I mean is, 7 pm will feel like midnight but don't be tempted to take a nap or go to bed early. Just suck it up on day 1, get to sleep at a normal time and wake up on day 2 and you should be acclimated.

The flight back from Hawaii was way worse for me than the flight there. But this was late 90’s when most(maybe even all) departing flights from Honolulu left at night. Our flight left at around 11 Hawaii time. I can’t sleep on planes, and even the Valium I took didn’t help.

Not sure if departing flights still work that way.

Last trip we flew out late afternoon and then flew out of LAX after midnight and got to Houston around sunrise. I dozed a little on the leg from LAX to IAH but also have trouble sleeping on flights. The 3 hour drive from Houston back home was brutal. I caught myself nodding off once or twice and was lucky to make it home without hitting a ditch.

I was on Oahu in July and the covid bs sucked.

But still had a good time.

I can't even imagine what the price for things now is with inflation, its already insane to buy or do anything.
