Yes, many years ago though. I went to Thira (Santorini). Beautiful location. Some of the oldest ruins in the world on the island.
Spent two weeks actually in Athens working for a hostel. Didn't like Athens at all.
What I liked back then: Food. Prices. Friendly people. Ancient ruins.
What I didn't like: Athens (grimy/crowds). Many of the drinks (Retsina (wine), Ouzo).
So much to see and do if you went there these days.
Good summary!
Good article!
Wolter's "Don'ts of Visiting Greece"!
Always wanted to visit Meteora. Not sure I ever will these days, but maybe could combine a trip on up to Albania.

Also interested in this thread. Will be going to Corfu for the first time in July.

Honeymooned on Santorini for 10 days. Best 10 days of my life. Stayed in Oia and traveled around the island on a 4-wheeler that was street legal. This was a little over 10y years ago, so not sure how much has changed. If I was going to do it all over again, I think I would have made it an even 2 weeks. Spend 4-5 days on 3 different islands. I heard from the other people vacationing at the time that Mikonos was very much worth the stop.

Went to Greece a couple years ago. Athens and Santorini. Spent 3 nights in Athens and that was plenty for me. It's a good place to go see but don't figure I will go back except for a layover to other Greek islands. That said, the ruins, food, and general sights were great. Can't recommend Santorini enough. Wonderful place. Stayed in Oia and Perissa both. Oia a lot more crowded but what everyone goes to see. Perissa a bit more laid back but still enjoyable. If I went back i would look at Fira area. Check out Santorini Dave online. He probably has the most information online regarding Greece

I agree with much of what Nole Man said. We did 3 days in Mykonos, 4 in Santorini, and 2 in Athens.
Mykonos was great. We spent hours just wandering the streets. The town is absolutely gorgeous. We did go to one of their famous beach clubs, but it happened to be a little cold and rainy that day, so there were only a few people there. We aren't too big into the late night party atmosphere, so we missed out on a lot of what makes Mykonos famous.
Santorini was our favorite. There is so much to do and so many things to see. We explored wineries one day, went on a long hike around the caldera another, and just hung out at the hotel pool and enjoyed the amazing views the next day. Santorini isn't for the very old/out of shape. You will climb lots of stairs wherever you go. If we had another couple days, we would have rented a moped and explored the countryside more because it is gorgeous. I will say that driving on Mykonos and Santorini is not for the feint of heart though as things can get very congested.
Athens was by far our least favorite, and I don't anticipate ever going back. The Acropolis is kind of a bucket list place, but, other than that, I can't recommend anything else. My ideal trip to Athens would be an early morning flight into Athens, head immediately to the Acropolis and Acropolis museum to beat the crowds (which are crazy by 10AM), and then catch an afternoon flight out.
Time of year is very important as well. We went in mid/late May in order to beat the crowds. The weather was a bit cooler than I would have liked, but, overall, I think it was a great time to go. Once it gets into mid-June, the cruise ships start picking up, and it can overwhelm the islands. I'm not sure how COVID will change things in that respect. It might actually make things even more pleasant without the cruise crowds.

We got many of our recommendations from Santorini Dave. He is pretty spot on (from our experience), so I would definitely check out his website if you are planning a trip.

I agree with everyone else. Did the honeymoon in Greece over 10 years ago, Greece was in the depths of the financial crisis. Santorini (Oia) was incredible. We did every activity possible including wine tours, boat rides to explore nearby islands, even the donkey rides up the cliff face. Mykonos is the party island but there is plenty of other stuff to do including getting lost wandering around the old town.
There is a nice trip from Athens to go see the Temple of Poseidon, which was sort of off the beaten path and worth the trip.
Next time I would also go to Crete.

Spent three weeks on Rhodes for summer abroad classes in 2009.
Got hammered 20/22 days or so there.
Attended 50% of the classes.
Would recommend.

I went to Greece like 15 years ago
Athens is dirty, but has the acropolis and some of the coolest museums anywhere, assuming that you are even remotely interested in archaeology or classical history.
As for islands, I went to Patmos (meh), Mykonos (good), and Rhodes (excellent).
Patmos is really just for biblical tourists. There's a church built at the site of the grotto where John the Revelator wrote "Revelations". The island is small, but kinda pretty. Not very remarkable, so I would skip it unless you're a hard core Christian pilgrimage person.
Mykonos was awesome. It's basically the Key West of the Aegean. I want to go back here the most as an adult because it seemed like the perfect cute beach town to chill out and drink wine and cocktails down by the shoreline. Just a really laid back and beautiful island of great sunsets, cute houses, and picturesque ancient windmills.
Rhodes was my favorite of the islands that I visited. It has something for everyone. It has a medieval town with stone streets around the harbor with lots of shopping and restaurants. It has the ancient ruined Temple of Poseiden and the Acropolis of Lindos. It has a nude beach with the clearest bluest water I have ever seen. It has a badass crusader castle you can tour. It even has some beautiful and truly ancient Christian churches and chapels if you're into that.

Thanks all. I am most impressed with Santorini for food and town, Crete for the beaches, Mikonos for the beach/ nightlife and Athens for historical sites (not looking forward to the crowds).
I have heard its cheap compared to the U.S. but once the ferries and taxi/ buses is factored in is it cheap?

I'd recommend flying to Santorini from Athens over riding the ferry. You can fly for like $50 and the ferry looked rather miserable.

I enjoy avoiding crowds if possible while on vacation. I'd even go in the offseason to avoid if i can.

I went in mid-September and the crowds weren't too bad and the weather was perfect!

I went to Crete back in 1996 and backpacked along the southern coastline, sleeping on beaches. It was awesome.

It pained me to hear people say "you only need one day in Athens" before I went. How could that be, it was the seat of Ancient Greece, surely you would need days if not weeks to untangle all the stories and get a feel for the city.
That said, you only need one day in Athens
Islands: I got a tip to check out Andros. It leaves out of the other dock and is about 2 hours away. Spent 5 nights there. Wish I would have stayed longer. Beautiful, low crowds, great food, etc... exactly what I wanted in a Greek Island escape.
Did Santorini, but it is just too damn crowded. Worth a visit, sure, but for my money and time I would go back to Andros in a heartbeat for a week or more.

If you want to skip Athens, then you could hang out in Amsterdam for a few days and catch a direct flight to Santorini!
If you do go to Athens, I second the recommendation to take a flight instead of a ferry. The ferry from Athens is pretty long, and you always run the risk of rough seas. The flight is like 45 minutes and pretty cheap.
We did take a ferry from Mykonos to Santorini because that is really your only option. That was my most stressful part of planning the trip. Pretty much every ferry company is rated 1 star and the reviews are full of horror stories. It is an interesting experience though. You form a mob and all rush into the boat at one time and toss your luggage in the same area with no thought of organization. We booked "first class" tickets (8 euros extra)just because I was anxious and didn't want to search around for a seat. As disorganized as it was, it actually took 1000 people less time to board and depart that boat than it does a 100 person airplane. My suggestion would be to book the largest vessel you can in order to reduce the risk that a choppy ride makes you sick. Also, consider getting one earlier in the morning in case there is a cancellation.

Corfu, because it's awesome.

Santorini is probably a bucket list type place and for that I wouldn’t discourage it, but there’s literally 100s of islands. Santorini is more an Instagram post, while the real Greece lies beyond.

If given the choice I would actually spend more time exploring the interior of the country and the beaches on the mainland. I am more partial to the Peloponnese. And especially the Mani Peninsula.
I don't think you can really go wrong anywhere because each island is unique, but as a rule of thumb the larger the island the more there is to do. And Crete, Euboea and Lesbos top that list.

I spent 2 weeks in Greece 2 summers ago and loved every minute! We spent 2 to 3 nights in Naxos, Santorini, Chania (Crete), and Athens at the end of May/beg of June. My favorites were Naxos and Crete. Naxos seemed like the quintessential Greek isle with beautiful beaches, ancient ruins, white architecture, and small enough to walk everywhere. I think it's similar to Mykinos but a little less partying and less expensive. Old town Chania was really charming and known as the Venice of Greece. We took a boat to Balos beach, one of the best beaches in the world and it was beyond amazing. Crete is also the birthplace of pottery and we were invited to a potter's family home / studio for a private tour, which was really unique and very cool.
Santorini and Athens are bucket list places like everyone else has said. Santorini was beautiful but overrun with tourists from cruises and it just seemed loud (though that may not be as much of an issue now). While in Athens we took a bus trip to Delphi to see the ancient ruins. It gave us a chance to see the mountains of Greece and they were beautiful. It was a nice change after being in the islands.
We took the Seajet from Naxos to Santorini and flew everywhere else. I preferred the Seajet b/c we had layovers in Athens for all of the flights and it wasted a lot of time. The Seajet ride was smooth and easy and I'd definitely recommend it.
