Family of 4 - kids 22/16
Looking for something different for next summer- thinking a lake town. Walkable downtown, good beaches, good food, touristy is ok (we want to see other people..)

Not sure how far you want to go but if you're up for it check out some bigger places in the Adirondacks like Saranac Lake or Lake Placid.
But maybe you meant a town that is on an actual Great Lake.

Traverse City
And if you have the time do a circuit of Traverse City, Glen Arbor, Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Where are you coming from, how long do hyou want to travel, how ritzy do you want to spend, what kind of accommodation?
Great lakes are big, baw, give us some direction and we will help.
Some favorites of mine:
Lake Superior Minnesota north shore - very remote, rugged, chilled out, cold water.
Lake michigan in southwest michigan - Chicago's hamptons, fun, easy to find people and things, getting a bit congested
Northwest michigan lower peninsula - the same as above but much more chill
Oswego NY - an old factory town, not much of a beach, but like to spend time here
Put-in-bay & catawba - total frat party
Keep in mind the wind blow west-to-east, meaning the best beaches are where the wind pushes the waves.

As in THE Great Lakes??
If so...
We go up there once/year.
My top overall pick is still Traverse City — it’s the most complete package with wineries, great food, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and a lively waterfront.
That said, if you want something a little more classic-summer and upscale-quiet, the Harbor Springs / Petoskey / Charlevoix area is outstanding. My personal opinion: Harbor Springs is the gem of the three. It has that perfect “up north” feel — walkable marina, beautiful old homes, cool breezes off Little Traverse Bay, and a relaxed pace that feels like summer should feel. Petoskey brings the historic downtown and great dining, and Charlevoix adds the lakeside charm and the famous mushroom houses, but Harbor Springs is the one that really nails the vibe.

Traverse City, Saugatuck, New Buffalo, Sturgeon Bay, Bailey's Harbor are all great options for Lake Michigan.
